Got my third UOA back on my Cavalier.

This was a 6-month run over the summer of bulk Petro-Canada 'Supreme' 5w30 conventional, installed by a Q-L I go to.

Driving was basically an equal mix of 'everything' - city, highway, short trips, long trips, idling....

2002 Chevrolet Cavalier, 2.2 OHV
132,708 miles on unit (212,333 km)

Petro-Canada 5w30 'Supreme' conventional
Purolator Oil Filter
4.0 litres initial fill; no top-up; 0.75 litre consumption
8881 miles on oil (14,210 km)

Iron 22
Chrome 1
Moly 162
Alum. 5
Copper 3
Lead 11
Tin 1
Titanium 0
Nickle 1
Silver 0
Silicon 26
Sodium 8
Potassium 0
Zinc 727
Magnesium 6
Phos. 649
Barium 0

Soot 0
Sulf. 31
Oxid. 27
Nitrat. 18

100C visc - 8.97
TBN - 0.5

Anti-freeze, fuel, water all 0

I find this report interesting, because I've definetly found the 'ragged edge' for conventional oil in my application. My last UOA was a similar conventional oil, run to 8018 miles (w/o top-off), and my TBN was 1.5. Now I've gone another 800 miles, and my TBN is completely spent.

I'm somewhat suprised at the Si reading. I did change my A/F about three-quarters of the way through this interval, and it was very dirty, but not rippped or mis-aligned, so I'd expect it to filter well. I'll re-check myy new filter at some point soon.

Even with these issues, I'm impressed with the wear numbers I got. Not bad when you consider how far I pushed this. I will learn from this, and will keep future intervals below 8k miles.

Would love to hear any thoughts or comments!

Wow! Not bad at all!

I can't get her Cavalier past 5.5k on M1....granted, her 2.2 (Eco) does almost all city driving, but I want to do a used oil analysis to see how spent it was.

Have to say the oil did pretty good...

Addy I do agree with your observations.

Well done as that is alot of mileage and time for this dino...a bit brave?; and it looks like you drained it just in time (according to the TBN).

Addy, wouldnt you now like to see a used oil analysis on your Cavalier for the Petro Canada 5W30 Supreme Synthetic for a similar OCI...just to see how much better (or not) the wear #s might be?

I would...that would be very interesting!

Don't know if it's going to happen, though...I've got another fill of this oil in it; and I have a jug of Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 I got from Walmart ($21.88 sale) to 'go through' first.

You nailed your own analysis. Oil is past spent. I wouldn't do this too often if you care about the car. I like to see some tbn buffer when I drain it ~ 2-3. I'm running a 10-12k km (6-7k mile) oci with Pennzoil Platinum 5w30. That's my max. It would be a good choice if you want to continue running this interval, but even PP shouldn't be run past 10k mile IMHO under good conditions.

I think your UOA was very good considering that you didn't 'top-up' the .75 litre that was used. I think you would have had an even better report if you added a half quart at about 5K.
Is this an Eco-Tec 2.2 or the old OHV 'thrasher'.

Addy, there is no doubt you are getting good at this stuff.

pbm,

It's a OHV 'thraser'. Very solid engine, just noisy.

webfors,

I am planning on 'backing off' my intervals, if I can. Things don't always happen the way I want to, tho. My 'plan' right now is to run my current fill to about 7-7.5k miles, and then run the PP I have for a full 10k. We'll see how it goes!

Toromont-Cat Labs. There is a large equipment dealer about 15 mins. from my house. I just go in there and grab one kit at a time, and it costs $18/kit + taxes = $20.34.

Kit doesn't test for Calcium and Boron, which is a bit of a bummer. But it does include TBN and 100C visc. if you ask for it, so it's a bit of a trade-off.

For the simplicity and cost, I'll most likely stick with them.

Not a bad UOA. I'd suggest as you stated to back off it a bit to 7.5k. At 8800 the oil was on life-support, but for a dino thats very impressive to say the least.

8881 miles...and to think some don't have the guts to run dino a mile past 3,000.

The oil is definitely spent and you got your moneys worth.

Does Petro-Canada manufacture their own motor oil, or are they supplied by a 3rd party?

I wouldn't run conventional more than 7500miles all highway and good weather. Although I'm one of those that changes the conventional oil and filter every 3k

They make their own. They also make their own gasoline. They are a big player up here.

It's my view you went past the ragged edge. I wouldn't go past 5000 miles with dino. Maybe you could fudge on that a bit, but not much.

I agree, that 0.75 of a liter represents almost 20% of the total oil capacity here, so the TBN would've definitely been a lot better if that much had been added during this interval.

This is teriable....TBN=0 after this short of a run !!!!! The iron is high, lead is high and cromium and tin should not even be present let alone together at 1 in this shourt of an OCI! If the TBN was 1.5 not 0.5 then it was still not good just not terrible! I would not use this oil in anything I own not even my lawn mower! Look how low the all AW and EP additives are.
