With that many miles probably well taken care of. Hopefully a simple fix like some of the things already mentioned would be my bet. Good job!

could be both.

the 3 series sometimes has water intrusion problems but the E38/E39 are mobile aquariums. every single one i’ve ever touched has had failing vapor barrier adhesive and/or sunroof drains.

the foam underneath the carpet can hold gallons of water and take out the terminal box under the passenger seat

E83 is the same way.
 
Had to back out - and back out hard. I was told it had a ton of miles and a #5 misfire. What it actually had:

Wrecked interior
Dead radio
Failed ABS pump
Bent wheels
Had to be manually shifted into first
Burned a quart of oil per tank of gas

I'm a little sore with him for wasting my time - but it is what it is.
