You are in a perpetual oil change. I would just keep topping off as needed and change the filter in 10K miles, if it is still running.

I think they 4-cyl's can have issues with the rings IIRC. My nephew had to dump his otherwise nice Celica because of burning. Still, 1 qt. per 3K isn't bad at all for a car nearing 200K. I'd go to a Kmart if you have any and buy Smitty's Super-S in the syn blend or HM syn blend 10W-40 and call it a day...

Thicker oil will not help. Any 1ZZ-FE engine made before 2003 has the same design flaw where the oil rings & oil return holes on the piston get clogged with carbon. The only fix is to take apart the engine & replace the rings on each cylinder + drill new oil return holes.

Here is a comparison between old & newer 1ZZ-FE pistons, Toyota doubled the number of oil return holes.

If anything, thicker oil will make this issue WORSE because it won't be able to flow through the already semi clogged oil return holes. People should research the cause of the oil consumption before making blanket suggestions about using thicker or high mileage oil or 'stop leak' additives.
