did you check the thermostat? just because its new does not mean in works correctly, it could be faulty right out of the box or even installed upside down. Then i would check the water pump fins.

Where is the electric fan relay?

Is the e-fan on the back or front of the rad? Is there a shroud?

The electric fan relay is under the passenger side headlight housing.

Do you have the 4.0L Jeep? If so, sound like you only have the electric fan only, which was standard. You only got the electric fan/mech fan combo with the tow package. Does the electric fan kick on when the a/c is on? Or with the engine gets hot?

Also mid-point on my 2003 Jeep GC is 210 and it stays around 204 to 206. Your thermo sould open at 195.

This is a 2001 Jeep GC with a 4.9 engine. No tow package. Electric fan with shroud on the back side of the radiator (towards engine). I will look where you suggest for the relay. The fan never comes on as far as I can tell. Engine almost to overheat with A/C on, the fan is not running.

This should help you with the relay:

Fan Relay Removal and Replacement (WJ)

Removal
1.Remove the negative battery cable from the battery.
2.To cut the access hole for the relay, first you must remove the passenger side headlight. To do this, remove the jackscrew from the top of the headlight. The jackscrew is directly on top of the headlamp and does NOT screw into the radiator core support (see pic below). After the jackscrew is fully removed (this screw is roughly 6" long), grasp the headlight assembly and forcefully pull the headlamp outward. Unplug the headlight wiring harness. Notice the exising hole in plastic under headlamp on my WJ.

Relay pullled out for changing

Reinstall

1.Connect the new relay to the wiring harness. Be sure it is firmly seated.
2.Attach the relay to the vehicle body in its previous location.
3.Reconnect the headlamp wiring harness.
4.Insert the headlamp back into its original position.
5.Reinstall the jackscrew in the appropriate hole. Be sure to apply some pressure to the bottom of the housing while doing this to assure the jackscrew passes through the retaining loop on the back of the headlamp. If you miss this retaining loop, you run the risk of breaking it off when tightening the jackscrew.
6.Reattach the negatie battery cable to the battery.
7.Start the vehicle and let it idle until normal operating tempurature is reached. You should hear the electic fan kick on around 210°.

Yep. If you don't cut that hole, you'll have to pull most of the front end off to get to it.

Alot of WJ owners have just upgraded and added the mech. fan to their Jeep so they never have to worry about that relay going out again. You can buy the the fan clutch at any autoparts store then buy the fan at the dealer. Then you just screw the mech fan on the the water pump pully.

If I add the thermal clutch and fan blade does the electric fan & shroud come off for good? RockAuto has a "reverse rotation thermal clutch" for this Jeep. Should it be "reverse rotation"?

Many serpentine belt vehicles require reverse rotation water pumps and fans.

I'd keep the electric fan and wire it up for manual operation when it gets really hot.

Ok, its the electric fan motor. I see them in RockAuto from $50 to $90 made by "TYC" or "Four Seasons" or "various manufacturers". Some the motor only, some the assembly (blades and motor).

Which to choose?
