amsoil atf 14,868 miles
186k on transmission

First analysis on this transmission had magnefine filter installed
what do you guys think? wasnt too sure what blackstone meant about oil filtration overloaded thanks

The viscosity of this ATF was normal (20W) and no moisture was found. Wear metals generally
read low, with copper reading a bit above average, but not by that much. This metal is from clutch plates.
The 0.4% insolubles were mostly metallic, though some appeared to be oxidized oil. This concentration of
insolubles shows that oil filtration was overloaded and in need of service. If this transmission runs well,
check back in 20,000 miles to monitor. Universal averages show typical wear levels for this type of transmission
after about 22,500 miles on the oil.

universal averages

aluminum 4 13
chromium 0 0
iron 29 72
copper 59 37
lead 5 5
tin 4 2
MOLYBDENUM 1 1
nickel 0 0
manganese 1 1
silver 1 0
titanium 0 0
potassium 2 3
boron 170 56
silicon 8 18
sodium 8 9
calcium 93 112
magnesium 1 7
phosphorus 545 362
zinc 9 29
barium 0 6

values should be

SUS Viscosity @ 210°F 47.0 43-51
cSt Viscosity @ 100°C 6.35 5.1-7.9
Flashpoint in °F 440 >355
water% 0.0 Insolubles % 0.4

Out of curiosity, what have you run in the past in that trans?
I'm going to be changing my fathers' '00 Maxima ATF and I'm curious to know what is a good bang for buck fluid to use. I'm pretty sure they share the exact same trans. (I30 and Max)

BTW did you install new filter or have someone else do it? I've not done one on this car myself.

i just brought the car about two years ago and installed the amsoil when i brought it so i dont know what the previous owner used. and yes i installed the magnefine myself was very easy to do

I just sold my 2001 I30 and I changed out the J-matic at 25k miles with Mobil 1 ATF, then went to Amsoil ATF at 55k miles. I sold it with 89k miles on it and a very smooth shifting transmission.

The pan drop on that car (which I never did) was a royal PITA, with the pan allegedly having 24 to 26 bolts, of which there were six different sizes.

I know you said you do not know what the previous owner used, but do you have any maintenance history (written?) to indicate he even changed the transmission fluid at any time/mileage?

actually yes i got the history and i do remember he did a service at 30 and 60k i checked the fluid before i brought it and it was red and didnt smell burnt i purchased the car with 144k on it and did a full flush with pam drop at 170k and 10k drain and fills i just flushed the transmission last december

it wasnt that bad took me forever with all them bolts. had to redo it i brought the transmission gasket from autozone and it leaked a few weeks later. i went to the dealer and got the oem gasket and all has been well tried to save a few bucks and got burned

When you dropped the pan, the filter easily accessible from there? I also plan on going OEM for that gasket.

there is no filter only a mesh screen which does not need to be replaced. all i did was clean the pan and magnets and bolt it back up

Ah, so the mesh screen is a magnefine? never heard the term. Thanks!

i took filtration overload to mean you filter is no longer filtering do to the metals found. another words service your add on filter. mike

no the magnefine is an external transmission filter i added to the cooler line. the mesh screen is in the transmission itself. dealer said unless its damaged its is not servicable
