3k OCI is overkill unless you have a real tough duty cycle which you indicated you didn't, but better than going to far the other way. Try getting an oil analysis and adusting your change interval based on that. If that V6 is one of the GM V6s notorious for coolant leaks into the oil, then difeinetly get an occasional oil analysis. You might catch a begining leak before it causes any real damage.

The most important thing with brand name paper air filters seems to be how will they fit you air filter box. AC Delco and Wix air filters that I have seen have fit well in various applications. Purolators not so well.

You are streatching it with the Dexcool.

If you are considering a cone type for performance, shck and see if you can reduce restictions in you stock box to get the performance you want first. The Z24 must have some web sites dedicated to it where you could get some idea how good or bad the stock system is.

Lifetime AT fill is questionable, very questionable.

change trans fluid every 50,000
pull the pan and chg filter too
your trans will love you for it
if you're feeling wealthy try Mobil 1 Dex III or Castrol TranSynd fluid

The 2.4L in the Cavalier is a four cylinder. They haven't had a V6 available for the Cavalier for a while.

If you're going to change the oil every 3k miles (which GM says is the OCI for "city driving"), just about any 5W-30 oil will be fine. I've used Mobil DC, Quaker State, Havoline and Chevron... basically whatever I can get on sale.

My wife has a 2001 2.2L Cavalier LS, and I use Quaker State oil filters (aka. Purolator Premium Plus).

In general, if you follow the owner's manual (what GM recommends), I think you'll be okay... so your plans for the tranny fluid and antifreeze/coolant will be fine.

The limit for the dexcool is 5 yrs/160k miles, My car was made in 2001 so 2006 is the year to change it.

The transmission is sealed and there is no dipstick on it, i'm sure i won't have any problems, never had a problem with any GM transmissions for our other 3 GMs.

I have read J-body sites and the intake on the Cavaliers and Sunfires is restrictive because it reduces noise. If I can change it I could probably up the response and help the fuel economy.

I have a 2002 OHV Cavalier and use Havoline 10W-30 oil, ACDelco or Purolator oil filters, ACDelco air filter (be careful with other choices because AC is the only one that fits the airbox correctly), regular green antifreeze (flushed the deathcool outa there). I would change the transmission fluid and filters every 30K regardless of what the book says if you are planning on keeping the car a long time. Don't forget to change the fuel filter every 20-25K miles. If you follow this maintenance procedure your Cav will go 200K minimum. I have seen several with close to 300K.

Hey, I got a 2001 Cavalier Z24 , it has a 2.4L with an 4spd auto. Heres what I'm gonna probably end up using in terms of filters and oils.I will change my oil every 3000 miles. My car is at 55,799miles and it has been maintained by GM for its life because the car was leased before me.

Motor Oil: Tech2000 5W30 or Pennzoil 5W30 (not sure)

Oil Filter: Wix

Fuel Filter: Wix (9$ its going in this weekend)

Antifreeze: Dexcool (i will change it next year 5 yr limit)

Auto Trans: Filled for life, (should be fine, I do not meet any of the conditions that GM specifys for the need to change at certain intervals)

Air Filter: Right now AC Delco, but I might switch to Wix or cone filter, (don't know)

What do you guys think?

I think you shold service the cooling system at most every 2 years and service the trans more often, unless you know your going to get rid of the car in a few years.

Have you tried Fram air filters? I put one into my wife's Cavalier, and it seemed to fit fine. Is there anything in particular I should look out for to know it's not fitting correctly?

It hurts me to say anything positive about FRAM, but the air cleaner element that was installed in the 96 Corvette I bought about 1.5 yeas ago fit very well.

If an element fits properly you should be able to stick it in the box anyplace in the groove it sits in and have solid contact between the filter, the box and the lid all the way around the filter.

I recently bought Purolators for three vehicles and all three were poor fits. They would work if carefully positioned but were easy to install so there was gap. There is no excuse for that.

I have never had a Wix that didn't fit right, so there is also no reason to lower yourself to the level of the Orange Scourge.
