2000 S40 volvo Turbo - Opnions needed

Volvo tends to be a more reliable European auto maker from that era. While some can't imagine spending $2500 for such a car, the days of the $1000 reliable used car are in the rearview mirror. You can get something domestic for the same price that when it breaks, will be cheap to fix. Blowing the turbo on the car would be a costly repair and blowing the transmission would most likely send it to the junkyard.

If one couldn't afford the repairs on a Euro vehicle when new,one certainly couldn't when its 15 years later...and parts prices don't go down as they age.If that's the case 58 Edsel parts must be dirt cheap.

I think from a reliability standpoint, probably the mid 90's Accord (5th gen 94-97) or Corolla would be a better fit.

Thanks guys, it was his suggestion. I'll steer to something else - I think his criteria is cheap, reliable and durable.

I like that generation S40 for some reason. Well, really, it's the V40 that I like, the wagon version. If you decide to buy an S40 or V40, the best oil filter value is the Mann HU 819x.

One more thing: the 2000 model is slightly different than the 01-04.

In regards to the specific listing in the OP, if you want, take it for a test drive, and if everything checks out OK, offer $2000

Both x100

Trust me... I know what European cars cost to keep on the road... Mine is bleeding me dry.

+1

The S40 lacks the higher grade interior and other things that distinguish the bigger Volvos. It was a joint venture car, and I've driven one, it's not great...they made it too small for me...and it's just plain cheap.

Average performance, for a premium price? No thanks...

The 200hp T4 versions available in Europe were actually pretty peppy back in the day, 15 years ago. I agree that the interiors were nothing special - cheap plastics and all. The seats were fairly decent though, at least for smaller folks.

Of all my buddy's family fleet of Volvo's, the '99 S40 Turbo was far and away the least reliable. He blamed Ford, I'm not sure why, but I helped him fix it often enough to believe him.

From someone who's also owned a Volvo or two, I agree with this guy

I fully admit that I miss my S60R. But there were some good reasons for getting rid of it. Namely the Volvo dealer that was literally next door to my work closed and I lost the homey hookup on parts and service.

Mine is over 200k miles with no major issues. I've replaced motor mounts, upper radiator hose and the idle air control valve. Other than those, just routine maintenance/tuneups and 2 timing belt services (one performed by me).

They are slightly different than 01-04 models but nothing major. Regular oil changes at conservative intervals are crucial with the 1.9T just like all turbo engines. I've enjoyed the car. No, it's not as nice as the higher end Volvos but it has been dead reliable for us. The car is solid, handles well and is comfortable (albeit on the smaller side).

It does have quirks like most European cars...it will throw a check engine light at the drop of a hat and some electrical parts throw a hissy fit from time to time but never just totally break. I also had an airbag light pop up once which I ended up clearing by disconnecting, cleaning and reconnecting the connectors under the passenger side front seat (indy shop wanted to replace the SIPS airbag for an insane amount of money). I love the car but I also like to wrench on my own stuff so take that for what it's worth.

Our S40 is the wife's daily. She came from a 2001 Civic and likes the Volvo better. It's more comfortable, more powerful, has more features such as leather, heated seats, etc. and even while it's considered a "cheap interior" by some it's much nicer than most economy cars of that era that would be in the $2500 range today. The Volvo also feels much more robust from the sound the doors make when they close to cruising down the highway..it just feels like it's put together well. No interior squeaks or rattles to note (since replacing the motor mounts haha), still runs great and returns decent fuel mileage (30+ mpg highway). The parts I've had to replaced were sourced from FCP and the prices weren't nearly as bad as expected but expect some heartburn if you pay someone to work on it, especially a dealer.

With all that said I don't think that particular S40 is worth $2500, more like $2000 if everything checks out. Mine came with a folder full of dealership maintenance records when I bought it used 5 years ago (every oil change, tire rotation, coolant flush, timing belt change, etc.) which has most likely led to it's stellar reliability for us.

Yes, it was, as it was pre-Ford venture days. S40 shared platform with Mitsubishi Carisma.
