2000 Ford Taurus- P0453

Hey guys,

My brother's car was throwing two codes, one of which for the o2 sensors. We replaced the sensors(4, total of 165.00!), and the plugs/wires. That code is gone, but we still have to deal with this one. I just don't know what I should do?

P0453:
Fuel tank pressure sensor condition. Evap system sealed condition is monitored by this sensor.

Probable causes:

-Fuel tank pressure sensor defective
-Check connector and wiring
-Check hoses and fittings

Just wondering what we should do first, any help appreciated.

BTW, he said the CEL initially came on after he had to swerve out of the way of another driver. When he recovered and accelerated, the light came on.

Replace gas cap. I learned long ago if you havew an evap problem look there 1st. CHEAP!!

That is what I would do first ,unless you have a gas cap checking vacume tool.

The dealer wants $250 for that sensor!! Wanting to avoid that, thanks for the tip.

I will, we're going to do the fuel filter as well as the gas cap tomorrow.

Right - gas cap is #1 for this code.
You should clear the codes - this is best to check it.
Vacuum lines/connections are #2 in the EVAP system.
Then #3 is the valve itself.

Well, we replaced the gas cap and fuel filter today.

Code is still there(we reset beforehand).

What would you suggest next?

We unplugged the negative battery cable for 5+ minutes.

Also add the charcoal cannister and it's connections to the list.

Mechtech, do you happen to know where the canister and fuel tank pressure sensor are located on this car?

Mike it's not really a furl tank sensor its really a evap system sensor. That diagram i sent you is it.

I checked that diagram and I see the sensor, but where exactly is it? Side of the engine, on the fuel tank?

After the gas cap/fuel filter did nothing, we decided to have my mechanic take a looksy. Also, I forgot to mention that when we took off the old fuel filter, it sprayed everywhere. Not sure if that means anything?

Anyways, the mechanic says it needs a new vapor canister and vapor cansiter purge valve. I ordered the parts online(much cheaper), and hopefully we can tackle this on the weekend.

We also found out the EGR tube is cracked badly, which is the source of the loud exhaust leak. We're trying to locate a junkyard unit for that one.
