2000 focus oil

I have a 2000 focus with 86,500 on the car. I have used m1 and for must of the cars life. Would i cause the car to leak oil or any thing if I go to PP, or RP. And what oil is the best for a 5k oil change

Mobil 1, Pennzoil Platinum, or Royal Purple

No leaks should occur.
Any one of those is more than adequate for 5k oil changes.
You can use a dino for 5k, if conditions are right.

RP would be serious overkill for a 5,000 mile OCI.

To be honest, for 5k miles, go with el cheapo Motorcraft 5w20 or PP if you find a great deal on it.

Not a good comparison but in my sisters 02 Focus the previous owner used Castrol 5w30 and since she's owned it only PP 5/20 or 30. No leaks or problems. I run one year or 10k OCI whichever comes first over the 3 years she's had it. The last oil change was 8k for one year. With this engine 5k oci are a waste with synthetics. This engine has been used since 91, started out as a 1.9, and through the different variants I don't know of any oil related issues.

Just so you are aware the valve cover gaskets like to leak a bit so if that happens after you swap brands of oil don't blame the oil. It would have leaked on M1 too. Not a bad replacement to do but something to be aware of.

Changing oils does not cause leaks or all of my cars would have leaked like the Valdez.

For 5K OCIs, you could run a syn-blend. No need for synthetics - unless you want to stretch-out the OCI length more - or you are first and last owner of your vehicles like me - that desire a nice clean engine every OCI.

My neice just bought a 2001 Focus with the SOHC engine, 82000 miles. I changed the oil to Valvoline Maxlife 5w30. It is good for the seals and is semi-synthetic so will easily do the 5k OCI or more... That is my recommendation...

I believe you would be fine switching to Platinum & saving a buck or two. It's Group III should weep less than the GroupIV/III blend of Mobil I. Majority posts around here regarding weeping/small leaks - mostly complain after a switch to Group IV oils.

Might I suggest trying Quaker State QHorsepower first? My smalll issues of Platinum consumption (two OCIs) diminished notiecably when I switched from Platinum to Quaker State.

I have a 2000 ZX3 with the ZETEC that has almost 108K on it. It was pretty much feed a diet of Super Tech 5w30 for most of it's life (since I owned it at 16K). I changed the timing belt about 8K miles ago so the valve cover was off. It was spotless, no sludge build up or any dark material anywhere (on top of the head at least) and very very little varnish to be seen. Also no consumption between changes. I changed the oil around 4K with this car but had run it over few times when I was running back and forth to school.

I guess the point is these motors are easy on oil so go with what makes you feel good and/or what's on sale!

I would go with Quaker State® Peak Performance 5w20 or 5w30 for 5k OCI.

In my opinion there is no "best" for a 5K oci.

I am running Pennzoil 5w30 3 quarts and pen plat 5W30 1.5 quarts and doing 5K intervals in my corolla (1ZZ-FE Motor)

You may not need high mileage oils to rid that oil-weep. Just switch to Group III synthetics - give them a try first.

if the car is not leaking now on synthetic it shouldnt leak on a different synthetic.


Just use conventional castrol gtx, with all the sludge and varnish that oil creates it will seal the leaks.
