2000 Eclipse Lost Power and Knocking

My 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse lost power this morning within 2 miles from home going 30mph. I felt it knocking very hard so I pulled over. Upon shutoff I could not start it again. It cranked but could not start. It even sounds like knocking when cranking.

Called roadside assistance and tried jump-starting. Tried several times and pressed throttle at the same time, it finally started. At first it looked idling fine, but with a tiny touch of throttle it started knocking again and losing power. I managed to move into the parking lot without touching the throttle in limp mode. It would not start again.

I towed it to a mechanics shop but they did not have time to look at it yet. Do you guys have any guess what the problem is?
 
Sounds like possible rod knock =/ I hope thats not the case. Ill ask what Clevy asked though, is it coming from the top or bottom end?

I am not sure! I hope it's not (rod) knocking, just some rattling sound like the 2010 Prius once had on a cold morning...

What about it idles "fine" without pressing on the pedal? I hope it's just a fuel pump or some sensors...

Consider this car is a bit more than $2k on KBB, let's see how it goes...
 
Maybe it's spark knock (detonation). Something could of happened causing the car to run lean and caused the tapping sound like a weak fuel pump or something. The fact it idles fine and starts to stumble when you give it gas makes me think it's a fuel issue but it's hard to say. Hope it's nothing serious!

Consider this car is a bit more than $2k on KBB, let's see how it goes...


Considering most eclipses are beaten on,and were built for it of course,there really isn't much demand for anything but a stock,untouched and unmodified example.
Kbb might say its worth something however most of the ones that are left are pounded on and need work. Most owners tend to be lax on real maintenance. Sure they do fluid changes but just about every one I've seen personally needed transfer case work as well as transmission issues.
They are worth what someone is prepared to pay.
That is one car I'd never buy used. Count on them being beaten the carp out of.
But turning a negative into a positive at least you can upgrade to forged guts so you can turn up the boost.
Then it's go time.

Nicely said. If I buy a car now I would not buy it. But at the time I was in need of a car and those beat up Corolla's were expensive!

If it's not worth being repaired I would just carpool on the Prius.

I'll say head gasket between cylinders.The compression pop between two cylinders is sharp enough to sound like a knock ,now your down to two working cylinders making starting and moving the car nearly impossible.
Second, Timing jumped a tooth or teeth,belt jumped.?

Another vote for a slipped timing belt. An intact belt that is stretched or off a tooth may allow the engine to idle okay.

IIRC, the t-belt interval for these cars is only 60K miles or so.
