OK all. I bought a 2000 civic lx for my ailing father. Has 160k on it and runs fantastic. Timing belt and water pump was done 20K miles ago. The owner had a manila envelope stacked with the entire service history of work done.
I have great confidence in the car.
So, anything in particular I should watch out for on these. Usually Honda's are a get in it and go car. The view under the oil cap was very clean too. Just a honey color of varnish.
Very dry underneath the car as well.

Ours the heat shields on the exhaust rusted out. The air filter is very small so needs replacement fairly often. The thermostat would stick open below about 0 degrees (so no heat in city driving) but in 87,000 miles, parked outdoors, that was it.

The distributor system is the weak link in i4 honda's with that style distributor system. This applies to lots of cars actually..its a wear and tear item...

if the ignitor or coil has never been replaced, be weary especially with that many miles. Sometimes the bearing in the distributor goes bad too-listen for a loud clacking sound. A bad ignitor/coil can fail anytime which can leave you stranded with no warning.

if you're worried, have someone check both of them with the multi-meter for its output.

The Distributer system was replaced about 20K ago along with the water pump and timing belt.
The car is an automatic trans. What fluid is required for it? And are there anythings I need to look out for on the transmissions?
