Wife's car has gone into limp-mode twice pulling away from a stop light in the last few weeks.

Pulled the TB and cleaned it off, but it wasn't that bad, so I haven't put it back on. There is no replaceable TPS on it, as it is part of the motor assembly.

There's an updated Throttlebody for it, as outlined in the TSB above.

Rather $$$$ for the part though, at around $600

I'm getting codes 112, 115, 117 and 119.

I'm also getting:
204 - "Plausibility, idle speed (leakage air)"
149 - "Plausibility error, air mass to engine throttle"

At least the part is easy to change, LOL

I'd head to the scrap yard for another one. There's lots of updated units out there.

And it is easy to get to

And running through the adaptation routine isn't hard.

Not many scrap yards with BMW's in them around here. But I'll ask the one guy I know of in the GTA who runs a mini BMW wreckers if he's got the revised one. Thanks for the tip! Appreciate it.

Well, I can't complain too much, this engine doesn't launch spark plugs, which costs nearly as much to have repaired as I'm going to have into this TB

And of course again, the cost of this TB is no where near the cost of doing LIM or head gaskets on a GM V6

This is the first "major" part replacement I've had to do on this car since I bought it "as is", I really can't complain considering what I paid for it. And it walked through a safety and E-test with the mileage it has on it, needing only a tie-rod end.

So far I've replaced a tensioner ($40.00), and the rear springs ($150/pair), valve cover gasket ($40.00) and changed the spark plugs. I'd say it has been pretty good considering.

Actually though the updated GM V6 IMG gasket set is under $80 and shops were doing the job for as low as $600, many even got a goodwill repair for free.

Depending on how long the car can be out of service, call around and have it shipped. The good news is that there are a lot of these cars out there at the end of their service life, increasing part supply. This is the first TB I've heard of failing, so prices hopefully aren't bad.

This would be comparable to GM LIMs if the BMW TBs failed on a regular basis. But they don't. Now those e46 rear springs on the other hand... (just changed my broken rears yesterday).

off topic:

guys that can wrench on a bimmer can have a lot of car for a sane amount of maintenance. it's when you have to rely on a mechanic that it gets painful.

everything is installed in layers. step one for any decent repair seems to be "remove the radiator." IME, they aren't that bad to work on--- you just spend your time peeling off layers of engine/cables/harnesses/covers (and the radiator). so it takes a while, which may be why service is so $$.

01 M5? nice car! bimmers drive like no other.

On Topic...

Only advice I'd give--- don't go aftermarket. If you can't find an oem pull from a yard or online, hit the dealer. I'm sure you know that bmw's are quite finicky about any 3rd party electronic bit.

It isn't the TB itself that failed, but the TPS/motor assembly

Thanks! Yes, I'm seeing if the guy that runs the yard has one, if not, I'm ordering a new one from Maranello.

Could you drill out the rivets on the TPS/motor assembly? I recall that some third party manufacturer sells TPS/motor assembly for Honda throttle body. Honda only sells complete throttle body and if you want to save money by replacing TPS, you have to go find after market and cut the rivets.

An entire used TB is only 150, I think I'll go that route.

Back when DIN size radios were popular with the "five finger discount set" they were called "Bust My Windows" BTW , my apology to anyone who ownes one for the performance potential built in. I know you folks are more likely to be seen at an autocross than the latest chickie trendy "eating establishment".
