Cool. Competition is what MS needs to make their products better. And more lightweight.

"Microsoft, we don't make it better, we make it bigger"

too bad the hardware is junk. but what do you expect from a 200 dollar computer.
my video card in my current computer cost $400 all by its self and my video card has as much ram as that entire everex computer has in its whole system..

What is this? A peessing contest? Not everyone needs a $400 video card. Most people use a computer to check email and browse the web. How fancy does a PC need to be to allow that? Obviously this PC is not targeted at a computer geek that wants a 99 GHz 27-core CPU and an artillerly of blue LEDs to make it look fast also, just so that he can brag about it on some internet forum.

Agreed. There are a lot of low income families for whom this is an opportunity. While one always gets what one pays for, it is sometimes better to have a low end machine than none at all. This at least gets them in the church.

Besides, in eighteen months that $400 video card will be worth $25 and "hopelessly obsolete". It's a never-ending spending treadmill when you play computer power user.

I think a fully stripped down Linux or Unix based "Internet only" system, pared down to the bone, would sell like hotcakes. Most folks only do Internet at home.

if i was going to brag i would tell you about the rest of my system. coincidently, i only have 1 led on my entire computer, the led that indicated the power is on. none the less thanks for showing youre true colours pete.

the problem is these super low end computer have super low end graphics that make flash animations and embedded video files slow the computer down so that things get jerky. even with a 1.5ghz piece of junk via cpu that thing probably skips every other frame of a flash based e-greeting-card.
why have the internet at all if its going to be crippled down? might as well go use the library computers , they are free and no monthly internet bill.

anyone remember lindows? its the same situation just different faces.

dell apparently offers computers with linux now. without even looking i have a gut feeling the linux computers make up only a fraction of dells sales.

I've got sub 1 ghz systems in our home network running stripped down Windows OSes that run core Internet tasks just fine. My laptop runs everything you can throw at it at 1.5 ghz.

It's when there is excessive bloatware resident or one must have the latest and greatest fully-loaded OS running that the extra horsepower of the newest hardware is needed.

Software selection always dictates system configuration.

But if this is going to turn into a "mine's bigger than yours" thread, you may find a few of us have bigger ones.

Master ACID, I didn't specifically say that you're one of them. I was just trying to point out that it is not necessary for everyone to purchase the latest and greatest, especially when they will only utilize a small portion of its capabilities.

To you and me, a flash animation that skips every other frame may be a big issue. To many others it may not matter if in exchange they get the PC at a very attractive price.

Obviously this type of low-end PC has its target market. It is not for everyone.

i see it all the time. people running antiquated computers and they proclaim they are just "fine" for what they do. in reality those people are just "cheap" and if they would upgrade to a better setup they could probably cut their computing time in half waiting for their massive swap files and exhaust 10 year old video technology to catch up to the jerking mouse. im not pointing fingers at you volvohead, but my example just happens to cross over to what you typed.

the best way i have found to show people this is to bring them over for dinner and let them use my computer. when they see that the login for some app on a web server loads in 3 seconds for me compared to 30 seconds for them, its a real eye opener. they didnt realize how slow their computers and 100mbit networks with some low end dsl internet connection really are. and then, i make a sale.

But many people could care less about computers. To them, it's just another appliance like a toaster or a blender. It's just there to 'surf the web'. So cheaper is better for them as it's not an important item in their life.

Internet access speed is a whole different issue, not related to the PC hardware itself.

But as far as 100Mbit LAN, realistically how much quicker will my pages load if I upgrade from a 100Mbit router and network card to 1 Gigabit ones?
dunno.gif

Enlightenment is much faster than Gnome or KDE. Fluxbox or Xfce uses even a smaller footprint.

Guess that the reason for them using Enlightenment is it offers more eye candy while not hogging the system?

oh man like 10 times quicker! after upgrading to gigabit you can download websites at 1000 meglobytez per second. bitog loads so fast that its loaded up before i even finish typing t in my browser address bar.

no im joking. hope you guys realise that.

we all know that lan speed has no effect on internet speed. atleast not when were talking about sub 20mbs connections to the web that i use anyways. but when youre network is hosting apps or files that are massive in size, upgrading the nics and router to gigbt while keeping the same cat5e cables is a nice little upgrade. espically since gigabit nics and routers are cheap now days. you can grab a pcix gigabit nic for like $20. regular pci cards are similarly priced.
pete i can see where you might be trying to catch me in a slip by having me say the gigabit lan makes the internet faster. not gonna happen.
