20 PSI VS 14 PSI filter

I have a case of Mitsubishi P/N MD356000 oil filters left over from when I owned a Mitsubishi. I am trying to figure out if they can be used on my new Honda? The honda P/N 15400-PLM-A02 is smaller and I think rated at 14 PSI Bypass. The Mitsubishi is a 20 PSI Bypass. My old Honda filter P/N 15400-P0H-305 are rated at 20 PSI and for the B-series. will the old Honda and these Mitsubishi 20 PSI filter cause any problems on the K-series or Honda Fit? I fitted the 15400-P0H-305 on the Fit, but I have not changed the oil yet on the 2008 Mugen Civic SI.
 
I personally don't think there will be a problem, but I would stick with a Honda filter or an aftermarket filter recommended for your application while it's still under warranty. Enjoy your new Honda.
 
I've been running an EAO20 on my overpriced Honda for 30K+ miles and it has a signifigantly higher bypass rating than the stock filter. If anything, it would decrease the chance of going into bypass.
 
I think I get it, the newer hondas spec 0w20 so the pressure relief is set a little lower. I use 0-30wt so I will benefit from a slightly higher bypass.
 
Consider the wix 51356 its bigger and better than the honda filter. Its beta ratio is 2/20=6/19 which filters better than any other similarly priced filter I can find. Great quality filter thats built sturdy and can be reused once without worry if the $6 price would be an issue for you. The wix 51334 is also another option but the 51356 is best.

One of the best ways to void your warranty is to use the wrong oil filter. If it is not listed in the filter books as an equivalent then I would not use them. Sell them and use the Honda or an approved equivalent. My way to do it. Ed
 
I wouldn't worry about it. A slightly higher bypass setting, in effect and IF a factor, will tend to fall into other environmental conditions that you could encounter over the vast variance in operation that the engines sees (in other applications over the full span of regions/climates).

A substantial differential is only present during starting (if oil galleries are empty) or when the pump is in relief. No pump relief? Not much PSID. Not much use for a bypass valve. Loading will increase and extend any PSID realized, but that's in advanced mileage. It takes substantial loading to produce any substantial pressure differential when not in relief.

Edit: Some VVT engines appear to have some peculiarities that may indeed make the filter a factor. They tend to be "exceptional".

Also, bypass ratings are variable(cheap poor tolerance springs).

Noone knows how/who created or tested the 'printed' spec that you're not even sure of.

If a given flow is required, test oil weight, test flow, test temperature..... can affect the 'printed' bypass pressure that you're trying to compare.

This filter fits Mitsu's from 1.5-3.8L. If it isn't too big and fits, it should work well in your Honda, my Nissan, my coworkers Hyundai, neighbors Mazda......

I believe that the issue with those VVT engines is a filter that empty out dry quickly(like Fram). Variable anything requiring oil flow and pressure to control measured movement has to wait for that flow/pressure, increasing cold start emissions, possible reducing power, creating uncontrolled cam phasing.......picture your cams flopping about waiting for the oil flow to take up slack(gross exaggeration). This is an issue with cheap or generic filters. I'm almost sure that the Mitsu OE part number covers an engine somewhere in their line with some sort of VVT(MIVEC). Use it and enjoy the +1 oversized filter's tiny increase in oil capacity and passive oil cooling.
 
I can't understand why anyone would risk their warranty. Using a non-approved oil filter on a nice new vehicle to save #3.00? I guess my many years turning wrenches has made me more skeptical than some. Ed

I've heard this same theme endlessly. Everyone says "stay OEM until the warranty is out!!".

Yet have no issues with the exact same (alleged) risk AFTER the warranty is out.

How is that rational? Can you endure the fear better without coverage?

Gary: I don't subscribe to ever useing a non approved oil filter. If one want to play then fine. If this theme is endless, maybe there is a reason!

No problem, Eddie. I just pointed out the oddity as I see it. By all means ...do what you feel is best/sensible.

It's just the same reaction I had to seeing CAUTION HORSES on the older style horse vans that were used in years past. I thought of putting a sign up at the horse shows reading CAUTION HUMANS. In a like manner, the notion isn't non-sensible to those who hold it ..but they rarely pondered that which exists in the congruent angle view.

For someone not like yourself, I could reword your advice to say "Wait until you have no engine coverage to experiment. That way you won't sweat it. It's a safer move".
