2 year OCI?

In a sealed bottle, companies like XOM say 5 years expiration (on m1 faq). Once oil is out of the bottle and in the vehicle, the expiration reduces based on exposure, contamination from prior fills, engine condition and usage. How long is safe? Only a UOA and your own comfort level will help you find the right answer. 2x6 month cheap dino's? once a year with synthetic? Both seem appropriate. You mention being the old guy at the car show with the old truck. Think 2 year OCI's will get you that? If you do go for it.

One thing nobody mentioned is a filter with good Anti-Drain Back Valve.
If vehicle sits for a long time, you want the the filter to keep as much oil from draining back into the pan as possible. Look for the red silicone ADBV. They will stay pliable at colder (Michigan) temperatures.

The filter is on the side of the engine pointed up in a angle like this //. It shouldn't be draining back into the engine.

I can tell you about 2 yr oil changes. Did it on the Camaro.

Only drive it during the summer months. Sits covered from the first road salt to the spring rains that wash the salt away. Most trips are regular driving, not short trips. Last few drives will be longer ones in preparation for storage. I put Seafoam in the gas during storage.

PYB 5w30. A little over 2 years on the oil but about 2700 miles on it. The only real change to a normal UOA was more iron. It looked like a standard change of a Mobil oil, no more. All the other numbers were within range for a 3k mile run. Looked like simple leaching on the iron.

I'd have no problems doing it again, and it will probably work out that way anyway. I put in some PP this change, though. We'll see if it's any different on that long of a run.

I'm in the same boat but I have two trucks that only get driven occasionally. I do one year OCI's on both of them using a conventional oil. I was running Valvoline white bottle but recently switched to PYB after getting some on a great after thanksgiving deal.

I also do one year OCI's on my 2004 Monte Carlo SS, My fiance's 2007 Mustang GT and her 2003 Ford Superduty truck with the 6.0 diesel because all of these only get around 2-3,000 miles a year put on them. I go every 2 years on my 70 Monte Carlo because it hardly ever gets driven.

The two 92 Cavaliers are our daily drivers and they get oil changes every 5,000 miles. Most of these vehicles are running a conventional oil except the Mustang which runs 5w-20 Motorcraft semi-synthetic and the Superduty which runs 10w30 Motorcraft diesel oil which I don't know if it has synthetic in it or not.

If i were to do once every two years I would put some darn good oil and filters on it for my 2 year sanity. And of course UOA to be sure.

Like the other guy said After two years all he had a little bit higher was iron. But say you got two one year intervals which the iron X2 is the same as the 2 year oci than I would say thats cool. unless you didnt want double the iron floating around for a while. which in ppm is not much.

Two years is most likely fine, either mineral or synthetic, but a UOA at one year will tell you for sure. You could also make sure to drive it to work at least once a month and that would do it a lot of good also

BTW, I am not pulling this 2-year OCI recommendation out of my rectum. I live my advice and run two to three year intervals on a car, trucks and barn stored farm equipment and the UOAs have been great. Look thru my previous posts and you can see most of those UOAs. There are many other "Old Oil" UOAs on the board if you are willing to do the legwork, including some 1980s oil.

I tried doing a 2 year OCI in my 3800 Camaro that saw limited usage (weekend trips, 1-2K per year). I couldn't do it. UOA came back fine but I think 1 year OCIs are all I can do and sleep well at night with.

^^^^ Totally agreed. A quality HDEO and Shell Rotella is one of the best.
