Its a zener diode (indicated by the vaguely "Z" shaped straight bar at the tip), which is the electrical equivalent of a relief valve. It won't flow 'backwards' until a fixed breakdown voltage (pressure) is reached, then it does flow, just like a relief valve. Unlike a relief valve it will flow freely if you bias it the other direction, just like any diode.
 
^^^ Ah yes ... got it. Had to brush up on the Zener diode symbology.
 
Although this thread is a couple of months old i for one don't want a filter that goes into bypass because the oil holes on the center tube are too small because they try to slow the oil flow so the media won't tear.
come on!
