I'd love to hear some opinions from the oil-heads here... this is the setup:
  • Dad's ride: '99 Corolla, ~100K mi.
    • 1000mi/month usage: 800hwy, 200 local.
    • Burns oil, ~1qt/1000mi
    • Unknown state under valve cover
    • Father is original owner, fairly regular about OC (I get on his case if it goes too long)
  • My whip: '02 Prizm (Prizrolla), 160K mi.
    • 200mi/month usage: all local.
    • ~1qt/3-4000mi oil consumption (typical 1ZZ-FE)
    • Heavy varnish in engine, dry black crust on underside of timing chain cover
      (Pics in this BITOG post)
    • Car previously had heavy usage, unknown previous owner upkeep but now only weekend use

  • Oils: Pennzoil Platinum and Pennzoil Dino, 5w-30, bought from various combo sales
Filters: K&N, Purolator classic, Carquest (Wix) Red

I'm neither willing to build up a stash/hoard oils nor do I really want to buy anything not on sale... so which oil would you use in which car? I'd like to use the PP in my Prizm for cleaning the engine, and it seems like a waste to put PP in a car that would just "lose" it. On the other hand, my car barely sees any mileage -- it's hard to justify anything fancier than PYB if I'm only doing 1 oil change/year now.

Putting aside any filial obligations to maintain my dad's car vs mine

how would you run these cars?

It's too bad the Advance Auto sale on PP ended yesterday, and I only bought 1 jug

I should have specified, I only have 5qts of each...

I would do this but for different reasons. You barely have to use any top up oil in your car. Topping up your dads car with pyb will cost less. Personally you should look out for some sales on high mileage oil and use them on both cars.

50 miles a week with a car that old, save your time and money and just keep on truckin. Dads car with 5k oci is ok just as it is. To go to syn is a waste of money. To even worry about how clean is just a point on web sites like this, in real life how many ars have clean conditions and go on and on??I would be more concerned about North Korea.
