2.2L Ecotec startup noise/rattle

Well, mine rattled pretty good this morning, about 4-5 seconds but I think it was from the cold. -18C and I didn't have it pugged in, didn't realize it was that bad out, but she'll be toasty tomorrow morning!!

Looked at a bunch of Fram cartridges today, all made in China. Have to say, the media didn't look as uniform as the Wix I have here. Can't say as to weather the nipple was different or not though.

Thanks for the advice guys...

Last oil change a bunch more did flow out when I opened the oil filter housing so I guess oil is being retained in there....

Hmmmm...the timing chain tensioner does sound like it could be a likely culprit....car sits for a bit and gets that loud noise for about 2 seconds...still sounds like a dry start but I suppose tensioner could make same noise?

Is this an easy fix? Or more like is it an easy diagnose for the tech to determine once they hear it? I'm not going to offer what I think it is to them, just wondering since the Ecotec is a pretty popular engine they must have dealt with these issues more than once

Thanks

As an experiment, I once placed a new filter into the empty filter bore just to see how tight the nipple was down there in its little cavity. It sure seemed reasonably tight. I suppose its possible that different rates of expansion and contraction, particularly on a cold engine, might allow some oil to get past the nipple overnight.

If I recall, there is a TSB that addresses startup noise regarding use of various filters. It advises the technician to check for evidence of missing, damaged or misaligned O-rings, and calls for lubing the O-ring on the replacement filter with oil before installing it. To me, the gist of the TSB was that the O-ring could be damaged if its too tight, thus damaging or bending the bottom of the filter enough to allow the oil to drain out. So is the issue too-loose, or too-tight? I'm not sure.

I get the rattle noise once in a great while, perhaps a few times a year. I always thought it was piston slap. I've never had a car with piston slap before, so its hard for me to say for sure. I'm at 104,000 miles on my Ecotec.
