High copper afflicts these engines too?

Yeah not bad at all. Almost purely short trip driving... this engine is probably easy on its oil?

This is an OHV engine right? Are these less abusive on oil compared to OHC designs?

The 3.8L is one of the easiest engines their is on oils. Yes it's OHV. Mine at just over 97,000 miles still is showing double digits of copper. So I don't think you have anything to worry about as your other numbers are fine. This engine is a tank and will outlast your want to own the car.

It's my friend's car, he's headed out to Iraq in about an hour (he's a 1LT in the U.S. Army)

He asked me to change the oil, basically look after it, and drive it a few times a month (his wife doesn't drive stick). I figured I'd run a UOA to be sure nothing was amiss...

Hmm, probably time for new Dexcool...

Probably a good Idea.

Let him know his services are appreciated

My 3800 was still belching out copper at 40k miles. I'm at 53k now and thinking at my next drop I'll do another UOA and see if has came down.

Might want to do some research on the Dexcool, some people spell it dex-death. I wouldn't put that stuff in his radiator. I'd go back to the good and well proven green stuff. Moly and Boron numbers look really good, just like a Pennzoil Purebase. Not too bad, but look, it only has 2K miles on the oil. That's 3.0 ppm per 1K miles for lead, not very good. Need to get that number down. I'd try a different dino oil since your bud likes it anyway. If it doesn't come down next round, I'd seriously talk him into synthetics.

I took out my dex-cool and put G05 from Autozone. Oh BTW my car is a 99 Pontiac Grand Prix S/C. I would get that crap out if I was you. It WILL only cause more problems down the road.

Hmm! Perhaps it was bulk Pennzoil then? It was a Pennzoil oil filter (in other words, a Fram with yellow paint on it).

Not bad, but I think those clowns at Iffy Lube overinflated the tires--the fronts were at 52 psi and the rears were at 40 psi!

Recommended is 30 all around, and 44 max...

Please do not use Fram filters on the 3800.

It is an insult to an excellent engine.

The owner of the car serves his country....even US Military GMC fleet vehicles will not use Fram.

Speaks for itself.

If you must stop by anywhere pick up an AC, Purolator, or even SuperTech

AC: PF47 or PF52 (oversize)
Purolator: L10111 or L24011
SuperTech: ST3837? or ST3980

That withstanding the oil did well
