Gday I have a 2020 model Land Cruiser VDJ 76 with the 1VD-FTV 4.5lt V8 diesel and want to know what the best engine oil to run would be? It is a DPF model which has always been serviced at Toyota but they are robbing me blind so taking it to my old mechanic for serving in future and want to supply my own oil and filters so I know it’s got the best of the best. I like Penrite and their site sais for DPF model to run a full synthetic 0W-30 which to me seems lite even on start up for a v8 diesel so any suggestions or input would be greatly appreciated
Cheers Rowan

What does the manual recommend? I would think ACEA C3 would be the ticket.

Any pics of your 76? Did you do anything to widen the rear track to match the front?

I'd have a Diesel Landcruiser, if we were allowed to buy them in the States.

They are about as fancy as an old tractor. Hugely popular in Australia and mostly for good reason, but they really are very compromised in a lot of ways.

I recently read (somewhere in the news!) that there is a 2-year wait list in Oz for the p/u bed model. True?

Edit: Read it here-

“Toyota has been manufacturing the 70 Series Land Cruiser at capacity since 1984, selling every model they could possibly build,” Proffitt said. “If you're an Australian citizen and want to buy a new Land Cruiser, you’re on a two-year waiting list.”

Yes, there’s always a bit of a wait on 70-series cruisers in Australia. They are super popular and a relatively low-volume car in terms of production numbers.

They recently discontinued the V8 turbo diesel and now it’s only available with the 1GD-FTV 2.8L 4cyl turbo diesel, in manual or even six speed automatic now!

Not sure how well this 4cyl one will sell, especially once the Ranger Super Duty goes on sale later this year. I really think the Ranger SD will steal considerable sales from the old 70-series.

I watch a couple of Youtube channels based in Perth, Australia, which post "Overlanding" content. They give the impression of feeling pretty positively about the 1GD-FTV 2.8 4 cyl engine, in their current 70-series vehicles.

They both have had numerous 70-series vehicles with the 1VD-FTV V8. I assume they're unbiased, but I don't really know.

old post, but here is my response: any 0w30 or 5w30 ACEA C2 or C3 rated oil. In theory C3 gives slightly better protection, but I don't think it matters in practice if the engine is designed for C2.

I have 83,000km on my 2019 VDJ76R, always run Havoline pro-ds 0w30 ACEA C2 because I bought 10 bottles of 10L when it was on clearance at Repco back in 2021 for $50aud a bottle. I did one oil analysis back in 2021, and it came back all good.

Once I run out of the Havoline, i'll move on to Gulf Western Euro Energy 5w30 C2/C3. I've been using that in my dad's 300 series (Lexus version), and all the petrol cars in the extended family (it's also API SP rated). Just means I can buy it in 20L drums for great value direct from Gulf Western in St Marys.

For oil filters, I buy genuine ones in bulk from the USA on ebay and use Toyota 04152-YZZA4 part number. It's the same filter as the one sold here, under different part number. https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/253097348784
