2001 Grand Marquis (4.6) with ~130,000 on the odo. Bought it a few months ago. Dealer had changed the oil (unknown) and I added a bottle of AutoRx as soon as we got it home.

We're coming up on the 3,000 mile mark and I'm contemplating which oil to use. My stash includes: Chevron Supreme 10W30, Shell 5W30, Pennzoil Platinum 5w30, Mobil 1 5W30, and SynPower 5W30 (I suppose you can see the sale_rebate pattern here //grin//).

Have a Pure One ready to go and I think I'm leaning towards a dino for a short rinse phase. I'll switch to synthetic and 5-7k OCIs (whatever I get to in one year) after this change. I'm in S Ga so any weight should be fine for our winter.

What are your thoughts?

TIA

As a nod to winter(but more impartant, to use dino for the after-A-Rx rinse), I'd go with the Formula Shell 5w30.

Formula Shell is loaded with Moly. The Merc should love that oil. I have a fresh change in my Toyota 4 Runner SR5 and it purrs like a kitten. IMO...Formula Shell is an under rated oil.

am very sad for miss my fav. car

I'd definitely go with the dino for the ARX rinse. After that it's fair game as they're all good oils.

Personally, I would have changed out all of the fluids out the day I brought it home that way I knew where I stood...that's what I do with "new to me" used cars. Anyways, of your oil choices, I'd go with the Valvoline Synpower 5W30. And the P1 filter is a great choice. I don't think you need to do a rinse phase as these engines are not known to be sludgers....they'll run forever it seems.
