How hard is this to do. I see no drain plug to take the fluid out. Do I just drop the transmission pan????

I believe you can drop the pan and change filter while you are in there on the 99 Burbs. Not sure though. Google it.

Place a drain pan under the transmission oil pan.
Remove the oil pan drain plug.
Remove the oil pan bolts.
Remove the oil pan.
Remove the gasket.
Remove the magnet.
Remove the oil filter.
Remove the filter neck seal.
The transmission oil pan gasket is reusable. Inspect the gasket and replace as needed.
Clean the transmission case and the oil pan gasket surfaces with solvent.
Air dry the transmission case and surfaces.

Here's the reinstall:
Install the filter neck seal.
Install the oil filter.
Install the oil pan gasket to the pan.
Install the magnet into the bottom of the pan.
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

Tighten
Tighten the oil pan bolts to 11 N·m (97 lb in).
Apply a small amount of sealant GM P/N 12346004 to the treads of the drain plug.

thanks. I will tackle it this weekend. Sadly last gen did not have a drain plug so I have to take the whole pan down.

Unless there is something blocking the transmission pan you shouldn't need to lift the transmission. Get a big catch pan and expect a mess if you don't go slow and easy. It is possible the pan gasket isn't reusable. Reusable ones are stiff reinforced rubber gaskets and are easy to clean up and reuse. If it is a thin flimsy gasket you'll need a new one. Most 4L60E filter kits come with a gasket.

and if it comes with a cork gasket, buy a rubber one. Cork doesn't last long.
If this is your first attempt to service a trans, I have a couple of hints- make sure you get the new filter all the way back up into the seal. Those GM filter neck seals can be a real bugger. Sometimes they stay up in the case or come off with the filter. I have been known to just leave the old one up in there if it does stay in place and put the new filter back up in there. It's probably better to use the new one though, but the old one can be a bit tricky to get out without damaging the case which is aluminum, so be careful. I've seen some Suburbans that you have to lift the rear of the trans to get to the rear pan bolts due to the crossmember. Usually just remove the nut or bolts from the rear mount, and then you can carefully jack up the rear of the trans (remember, the rear of the engine goes up too) just enough to get to the pan bolts. Be careful and get some experienced help the first time if you need it. GM did not make some of their RWD vehicles easy to service the ATF. And the drain plug in the pan? -good luck getting that one out. That one's just a tease to make you think you have a drain plug, I believe.

There is also a part code sticker in the glove box that will identify the transmission model. There were some 99's that got 4L80's so make certain you check because the filter and gasket is different on the 4L80. FWIW, my 99 has a 4l60E with no drain plug. My 02 had the drain plug.

well check this out. Aamco was having a special for $79.99 so I got it done there. They said the transmission is in excellent shape but now when driving bewteen 40 and 50mph the rpms bounce around looking for a gear? They only bounce about 500rpm
