Guys I have a 1999 mazda protege with a 1.8l in it with 198000 it is my work car, I drive it everyday 60 miles back and forth to work the car don't leak a drop but it was using 1qt in 3k. I have been running PYB 10w30 and wix filter. The engine is a little noisy at start and puff of smoke the fine all day. I change to Pennzoil HM and purolator oil filter Pureone. Now with 3 weeks on the oil change the engine is quite at start and no puff of smoke. I used pennzoil 10w-40HM hat is all the part store had in stock, Is the oil or the filter to blame for the for my good fortune? Do you guys think 10w-40 is too thick?? I have noticed that wix filters on this car does leak back after the car sets for a day or so it has not done this with the purolator Pureone..

My friend has a 1998 DX with the 1.5, about 100K; Don't bother with DriveWorks filters at AAP, they drain out too over night. Pureone, as you noted, do not. He noticed startup noise too. I should have him try the HM oil.... He is using Peak 5w30.

This car runs strong at 200k I would not worry to drive it anywhere. My wife and I had it since new been a great little car.

the FP (the 1.8L) and FS (2.0L) are known to have both rings and valve seals that don't like to last very long. My Fp was similar to yours by 130-140K and I Had been using Mobil 1/ combination of other top tier synthetics since 60K. Granted I also beat the living [censored] out of that car (and I don't think it ever quit on me) but It's a fairly common problem with those engines.

I wouldn't have used a 40W, more so considering the oil pressure problems those engines have. Switch back to a HM 30W next time.

If you want to cure the oil consumption, you're likely going to have to do a rebuild.

Had the same car developed a oil leak around the timing belt cover. Not worth it to fix. 135,000 had other problems too.

If there is an oil leak near the timing belt, the timing belt could quickly be destroyed. If the grease seals on the belt idlers are less than perfect, the oil could damage those items and destroy the timing belt. If I was the owner of this car, I would have new cam and crank seals installed on the front of the engine, then replace all the timing parts. Also, if the water pump was driven by the timing belt, I would replace that too.

I put timing belt and water pump on my car at 160k it want bad then but it had so many miles I thought it was good maintance. I have done all the work on this car since new. The pennzoil HM stop smoking and noise at start up. So the 10w-40 is bad??? Because of oil pressure problems?? What kind of oil pressure problem does the 1.8l have??

Bad as in causing immediate catastrophic harm? No. Bad as in not ideal? Yes.
the suction tube is in a bad spot, and the pump itself just does not generate a lot of pressure. Granted a stock FP will not generate the problems in the same capacity as the MSP's do that acutally encounter it more often, but it's using the same pump.

It won't blow up of you use a 40W, I just wouldn't use it knowing what I know about the FS-DET
