Hey all:

Just wanted to ask a few questions about AutoRX and my 1998 Oldsmobile Aurora. I have used ARX once before in another engine, and it was great, so now I am ready to put it into my new Aurora. First, I have 7.5 Quart Oil sump, and the engine is a 4.0L Northstar (Cadillac 4.6L redesign for Olds). Should I be exact in my use (15oz), or round up to the 8qt application (18oz)? The car has 74500 miles on it, but I have no idea of whether it is a dirty engine or not. I know it is a hot engine, and that that could cause some sludge. I have also been told by my mechanic that there is a tiny oil leak, but he was unable to determine from where it originated. I'm looking at Synthetic oil after all is clean, and am curious about the maintenance dose. Does adding the maintenance dose do anything about the oil change interval plus or minus? Also, how long does the ARX last in the oil?

I also want to ARX the transmission (4t80e, 12.6qt capacity), but here is the thing. The fluid (DexIII) was a little bit low when I got it, and very brown. I added a little more fluid to get it up to level, but am worried about whether this fluid will be alright to continue using throughout a cleaning cycle. Really, I can't afford to screw the transmission up, but the T-Tec flushes are not cheap, either. Also, when are we supposed to change the filters in this process? And I know that Frank Miller says mineral oils are best for cleaning, but Should I/Would I be ok going synthetic for the replacement fluid?

And finally, for the Power Steering (1.5 pint capacity). I have Magnasteer variable effort steering. Do I just make the assumption of adding 1 ounce, since measuring less will be rather difficult? And is the Turkey baster extraction truly sufficient, or should I have that fully drained, too? Would adding an inline filter be good for the car?

Thank you for your help. I hope to have answers sufficient for ordering my ARX for 2 Aurorae in the next few days, before that rate increase.

Wife has an Alero (2002). Not going into my dislike for the car (major issues)

The transmission is to be done at 50K per the service book. I would just drain and refill though the normal process every 30K not 50. Also the filter are cheap online, very cheap. The only filters that are not need to be replaced per say is Toyota/lexus. It is a steal (stainless) filter.

I use Amsoil in the transmission now and it is 100X better.

My folks had 2 first-gen Auroras and now have a 2nd-gen. The first one they bought new and it was an excellent car. The second was a used-car purchase and it ended up having some transmission issues. That appears to have been the result of a shop screwing up the threads in the radiator for the cooler line and losing a ton of oil (more than once and they messed up more than one radiator) onto the belly pan, from which it didn't drip until things were very low. Current car is fine but I like (and so do the folks) the first-gens better.

Anyway, how does the mechanic know there's an oil leak but not know from where? The rear seal on these motors seems to fail with higher frequency than 'normal' so I'd look there. I'd round up to the 8-qt. treat level. I'd also stick with a 'dino' oil for the treatment and rinse. The folks' car is operated in Phoenix and there are no 'heat' issues with this engine and its oil.
