The vehicle is All Wheel Drive. The overruning clutch calls for ATF +4 just like the A604 transmission that seems to blow up on anything besides ATF +4. Do the same rules apply for the overruning clutch or can I put D6 in there?

Thank you!

The most important characteristic in tranny fluid is viscocity and friction coefficient, and since ATF+4 and Dextron 6 are most likely different (I didn't check) then I say don't try to use the wrong fluid. There is a reason they spec ATF+4 and didn't just draw a spec out of a hat.

Same rules apply for clutches.

Just out of curiosity, what are you trying to achieve by using D6 in lieu of ATF +4?

+4 is cheap, easy to get, has frankly excellent characteristics and you likely have plenty on hand anyway for the A604. If it made it since 1998 with +4 in there, why not keep using it?

Isn't the overrunning clutch just a mechanical thing? I'm assuming (you know what they say about assuming ...) that it's just for lubrication and not for power transfer / bad lubrication, etc? I don't think the "wrong" atf would affect that as much as a transmission.

Thanks guys....have .5 a quart of ATF +4 here after changing my transmission fluid (took 6.5 quarts) and that is what the overruning clutch takes. For some reason, fluids also seem to take a bit for me than for others. Maybe it is because I take my time letting things drain?

What I am REALLY asking here is can I put that ATF +4 here and put a tiny bit of D6 in there to drop it off if required?

I hate Walmart and I am quite a ways away from it living in a semi-rural area. I have plenty of D6 laying around though after putting it in my Escort GT's Manual transmission.

As far as straight D6 goes....I would hope for less friction, more mileage, more power, etc as a small piece of the other things that I have done to obtain such. I know that such gains are small, but that is the case for many things unless you put them together.

I ended up just turning the bottles of ATF +4 upside down to add to the 1/2 quart I had. Beats Walmart!
