Hello Bitogers,

I have a 1998 accord v6. The transmission has been making a hard shift from 1-2nd gear for quite a long time and I ignored it. The car still runs as normal, but I have noticed one thing that it only shifts hard when going straight. When making a left turn, it shifts almost normal, no jerk. I have asked a technician could it be transmission mounts and I believe he said it was or something similar of that nature.

Now, I don't know much about car and it currently has a little more than 202K. I still would like to keep it long and
fix the hard shift if it is not transmission related (internals) but caused by the transmission mounts. I looked at majestic honda for parts and found transmission rubber mounts but it looked very small compared to motor mounts. Could it possibly be a bad motor mount?

Remember, it only shift hard when going straight, but when making left turns, it almost shifts normally. By the way, I am a DIY to learn and save money. So the car has been properly maintained through out its life, except for the hard shift.

Thank you Bitogers for your inputs.

Yep, motor mounts are a common problem on those cars

Does it also make a clunk/jerk when heavily accelerating from a stop? Good way to check for broken mounts is to have an assistant do a few quick brake torques with the hood open while you inspect the motor. There should be very little, if any, movement.

When slightly heavily accelerating from a stop, I believe I can feel a bit of movement as if there is a small gap between engine and motor mounts engaging each other. When heavily accelerating while cruising, it makes a horrible jerk. Or if I am coming to a partial stop with about 5mph or so, pressing the gas pedal would cause a horrible jerk.

What is the brake torque technique? I once saw the technician told me to press the brake and press the gas pedal at the same time to check for movement. At the time, I though it would break the axle..lol.

This jerking has been for around 100K, now how bad is this for the transmission? Or am I one of the lucky guy, still original everything. Can you tell me the procedure to check and see which mount is bad (motor, transmission, etc.).

Thank you
