Looking for oil recommendation for a 1997 Mercruiser 454 Carb. Engine. The engine only has about 110 hours (Guy before me did not use it), and looking for alternatives to the Merc. 25w-40 due to availability. Manual recommends 40W or 30W if not using the Merc. oil. Boat is used from May to Sept. (70 deg.+), and about 30 hours per year.

Also, if you have a non-Merc filter recommendation, please let me know.
Thanks

Are the 15W40 oils Diesel type? And if so, no problems using them in the marine gas engines then?

Thanks for the advice.

Though called by many Diesel oil. The oils are properly called HDEO oils [Heavy Duty Engine Oils] which are made to perform in the most severe commercial operating conditions in diesel and gasoline engines . Those are the oil commercial maritime companies use in ther high speed diesel and gasoline engines it is the best choice of oil for your engine. "Real" Diesel oils have different additive etc.formulations than the HDEOs.

I have ran HDEOs in my boats with great results The engines look great at teardown [7,500 RPM big blocks] and all the commercial maritime companies I have been to run one of the big 3 HDEOS in their high speed diesel and gasoline boats so that is good enough for me.
