I have a 1996 explorer. Can I use 85w-140 in the rear. I have alot of this weight oil. The car calls for 80w-90. Car has 197k on it.

Pablo, I live in NJ. What do you mean by what is actual viscosity of oil? Excuse my ignorance

Oil is about 5 years old, it was from walmart supertech. I bought it a few years ago when I realized it was the wrong weight I purchased the correct weight of valvoline oil. I really have no other use for it and would hate to recycle new oil. I figure if I put it in the rear I would run it till truck died. But to be hhonest this has been the best car I have owned maintanence wise. I have put almost 200k on it and it still runs and looks fantastic. It could probably do another 100-200k . Ray

I wouldn't run it. I mean it would be fine in the summer - assuming the 5 year gear oil is OK. BUT That's pretty viscous stuff for NJ winter.....maybe check out a bottle, if it's not off or settled out, put it in now and run it until December or something.

Given that you live in the Garden State, Pab's recommendation seems to make good sense. Bruce lives in NoCal, and I live in SoCal, so we can use just about anything.

In my '95 Explorer (which has a LSD), I am currently running LE1605 (SAE 110) and ACDelco LSD additive. In fact, I am running LE gear lube in all of my vehicles that use gear lube.

A lot of manufacturers will factory fill axles with 75w140 if they have a tow package. My truck has had it for over 10 years and Canadian winters with no problems.
I don't think it will cause you any problems.

Experience is better than conjecture!

the VIs never uncoil enough in cold winter conditions to push the viscosity up to 140.
not to worry. if you're summer hvy towing, you need the 140
