Last August, I had the water pump and timing belt changed. This occurred after a failure - previous owner changed T-belt, but not pump. Pump started to leak, and ended up shredding tbelt, leaving me stranded. Why you wouldn't replace both is beyond me, but whatever....

Now, as of today, my Oreilly's Master Pro Select pump is shot. It has a lifetime warranty, but of course, my mechanic is going to have to charge me something.

My question - anyone have a pump go out in this short of time? Truth be told, I went over 20 years of driving without having ever had a pump go on me.

The Critic is right - a lot of those "lifetime warranty" pumps have a lifetime warranty because they cost so little to manufacture. Quantity over quality.

Most of the part store water pumps are made in China. I would replace the pump with a pump from the dealer.

I have been using non Toyota pump, but not store brand either. Something like Gate, AC Delco, Becks Arnley, etc, never had a problem.

I had a 1988 Camry and the waterpump would start to fail every 55,000 mile, The cam belt was recommended to be changed at 60,000 miles. After the first time you can change the belt and water pump quick. The Camry wasn't a bad car ,it never let me down.

If you are doing the work yourself......I recommend one of the 2 following sites, there are others.
www.toyotapartszone.com Very good, detailed diagrams.
www.toyotaparts123.com

For the best accuracy, enter your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) when doing a parts lookup, so that the parts best suited for YOUR vehicle are the ones that come up.

I looked up, at the partszone the made in Japan 1996 with the 1MZFE motor and the water pump list price is $122 and change, and they have it for $88 and change.
They have the water pump gasket for just under $6.
The water pump for the 4 cylinder is about $80.
These are OEM parts from TOYOTA dealerships that have their parts departments online.

They have a "get info link" that you can follow to get a nice diagram with labels.....it shows the bolts, studs, gaskets etc and identifies them so that you can select them from the list.

For aftermarket, give the rockauto website a look....they have Asin and Beck/Arnley brands, as well as a BUNCH of others.

To answer your question, no I have not had one go bad in this length of time. My experience with my 1MZFE is that I changed out the pump with my second timing belt replacement, not that it was leaking or anything but just because it had been so long. But I must say the pump looked pristine when removed, no evidence of leaking or anything. What kind of coolant are you using? Toyota red? I have over 230,000 miles on that vehicle now and the radiator and internal engine passages are like brand new, I would recommend you use the Toyota red when you replace the pump this time.

Aisin is the OEM manufacturer of many Toyota parts, including most water pumps. They are somewhat difficult to find aftermarket, the one I did find had the word "Toyota" ground off the casting. But a OEM pump from an online dealer was about the same price so there's little reason to spend a great deal of time finding one. Personally I wouldn't use anything else.

I will echo that.....the CHEAPEST I saw on the Rockauto website was just over $36......and you can get Genuine OEM for about $88 (plus shipping in both cases).
With all the labor involved in the repair $400 and up on labor charge........I would go with OEM level part.

Bendix may make some brakes for Chrysler, but that doesn't mean Bendix value grade (making the name up) pads are the same as Chrysler OE pads.

I think a lot of people get caught up with the OEM part mentality that if the brand is from your car's country of origin-- then it must be good. Can't say that I agree with that; call me a skeptic. Aisin may very well make water pumps for Toyota, but I sincerely doubt that Aisin's OE line and aftermarket line are the same.

what are the symptoms? leaking weep hole? noise?

Looking back, I didn't change the pump with the first timing belt change because it looked fine, sounded fine, and turned fine with no problems. It also felt that way the second time but it had been 170,000 miles and I thought it best to change it. There's a bit more work involved to change the pump in addition to the belt, you have to remove the camshaft pulleys and the #1 timing belt cover (a steel plate bolted to the head). There's *almost* enough room to remove the pump without taking the rear cover off, but not quite. You'll need a tool to hold the camshaft pulleys while removing the locking nut, and on the rear pulley there's not a lot of room. One should also put in new camshaft seals but this too requires a tool due to the limited clearance on the rear shaft.

X2

X3.

And it's not a great idea to replace the cam seals withought pulling the valve covers and the #1 cam cap, and resealing the cap as well.
