It turns out that it was the 5.2L V-8 so I only needed five quarts. I put in the three 10W30 quarts I had on hand and finished with two 5W30. I showed him how to check the oil and gave him a quart and a funnel and told him to check it monthly. When I drained it, only about 3.5 quarts came out so I showed him and explained how he needs to keep a close eye on that. Thanks all.

In that case, also forget all the suggestions for Xw40 and just run 5w30 year-round. The 5.2 doesn't need or like heavier oil than a 30-wt. Its got a very different oiling system and runs more pressure than a 4.0 (Chrysler-designed 5.2 versus AMC-designed 4.0).

Its a Cherokee, just Grander. :-)

5qt jug of oil of your choosing.

I've been running 5qts Valvoline MaxLife 10w30 for several years 10+. A quart of Lucas oil stabilizer.

But above all I run the wix 51515 oversized oil filter. Or napa gold 1515

Stay away from those orange Fram for oil.

I have 243,000miles on my xj

To the OP: See? If a Jeep engine can survive a quart of that slimy excrement mixed in with its oil every oil change, it can survive any good oil in the sump. :-p
