I've got a chance to buy my dad's 1995 GMC Sonoma for a good price, like maybe free. It's a 4WD extended cab, 4.3, with the 5 speed manual. Garaged, low mileage. Any particular problem areas with this vehicle that I should pay attention to?

Although GM is absoultly on my poop list, I do not know of ANY problems that can occur that are commenly known.
To me, the 5 speed would be a plus.

I had a 1995 S-15 standard cab 2wd, 4.3 that I bought new. No serious problems in about 110k miles. My son has had it for the past 3 years and added a few more miles with no problems. It was reliable transportation, hard to get enthused about, but as an older low priced vehicle, I would say go for it.

The oil cooler hoses had a reputation of letting go, but mine never did. Replacement hoses are inexpensive if you want to do PM. I had the high performance version of the 4.3 ("W" engine option IIRC). The central point (CPI) EFI never was outstanding but is still working. It is expensive to rebuild if you even need to. I believe the "Z" engine had a simple throttle body system that is trouble free. I wouldn't let that bother me either way, the truck has obviously gotten past the Infant Mortality period of it's life.

The only reason I git rid of mine was that I decided I no longer needed a truck.

Get it, and keep it for a while.

It may be handy to have around and grow on you.... or you may not see any need for it after several months and sell it.

Either way, for a reasonable price, I'd buy it and find out. Good pickups are always in demand.
