Need to drain the Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) to a 1994 Civic LX 1.6L (Automatic).

Do we have to use Honda Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF)?

Are there any other approved ATF's that can be used?

Any advice is greatly appreciated

Maxlife, Castrol Import, Honda DW-1, Idemitsu. I believe they are all synthetic.
Takes 3 quarts... Easy $$.
All good.
I would do 2 spill and fills; 1 now and another in a week.

+1

Castrol Import is not synthetic though. Not sure about DW-1 or Idemitsu.

Valvole Import Multi-Vehicle. I think it's thicker than Maxlife which is good for older vehicles. But really both should be fine.

How smooth does the tranny shift?

Never noticed any hard shifting

Use Castrol Full Synthetic ATF. It is on sale at AAP for $5/qt

No, they're not. They love Valvoline MaxLife, Castrol, etc just fine.

I have a '99 Civic with 248k on my original transmission. I've always used Honda ATF. Would others work? Probably, but since Honda ATF has gotten me this far, I don't see a reason to switch now.
