I had an old 92 Toyota filter sitting around (switched to Amsoil filters back in 92 on this Camry) and put it on a few months ago. Anyway, changed the oil this weekend and cut open this filter. the strangest looking inside pleats I have yet to see. They were not vertical as in every filter I have seen cut open. Very dense and sort of a sideways horizontal pattern.

Not sure if Toyota filters are still made like this but it sure was different in construction.

Spector,

I understand when Toyota went to the physically smaller oil filters on most of their engines - the one that is the same size as an SDF-57 - that they also changed the media design. The idea was to cram more and thicker filter material into the filter, so as not to lose efficiency and/or capacity. The very small Toyota filter used on the 2.2L Camry engines also use this design. Somebody cut open the Lexus V-8 filter a while back and it also looked like this as I recall?

Older Toyota truck engines used to use a FRAM PH-8A equivalent sized filter, or the shorter version of this filter - basically an SDF-96 equivalent. This filter held a full quart of oil, compared to perhaps 10 ounces in the much smaller filter they use now.

I run the much larger SDF-96 on my tacoma in place of the SDF-57. This is the same basic filter as the Mobil 1, M1-204 ....I have also used these on my truck.

Not a one of the filters shown in the pictures looks like the 92 I cut open. The pleats were horizontal in the filter, not vertical. Really strange design.

Oh well

Thank you kreativ!!!
That second link provided me with a Lexus filter part # that will fit my '93 truck since the Supra uses the same filter as I do right now. A larger filter and still OEM!!!

Someone tell me quickly any reason why I shouldn't consider this so I can stop -->

Toyota & Lexus' 90915-20004 filter can be hard to find for less than $10. Check the Toyota dealers that advertise low prices on mail order parts. Send me a PM & I'll sent you the URL for the dealer I bought my filters from.

Also consider the excellent Mann 711/80 oil filter for your Toyota. Do a Google search for Source for Mann oil filters (and I'm not sure that they're available at all.)

When I was on business in Blumenau and Curitiba in October - I saw a lot of Mann filters at lube and auto service places - It shouldn't be suprising with the German heritage in southern Brasil (Santa Catarina) and it doesn't suprise me that they are made in Brasil! (land of domestic content)
