Which one?

Gates or GMB? Doesn't matter?

Isuzu branding from memory
Hombre = S10/Sonoma (GMT325)
Ascender = Trailblazer/Envoy/9⁷x (GMT360)
i Series pick-up = Canyon/Colorado (GMT355)
They shut the door January of '09, so some MY08 models were being sold in 2009/2010
With a 10 year warranty, the last one probably expired sometime in 2020 😳
Enjoy this painfully 1990s dealer training video for the Vehicross

Don't forget that the Trooper was sold as the Acura SLX and the Honda Passport / Isuzu Rodeo.
And the Impulse/Storm
If I know (without looking it up) what every one of these models look like and which drivetrain/powertrain they come with, then does that make me an Isuzu fanatic too? I think I know the answer...because I get more excited about seeing either of these in good condition, than seeing a supercar... Either way, I'll throw one more in the mix: 1996-1999 Isuzu Oasis AKA 1995-1998 Honda Odyssey. Because VTEC.

My buddy's dad had an 89..loaded w/5 spd. I liked to go surfing in it. I recall a cool set of gauges...like offroad clinometer?

Ok I was off...center gauges...

I'd wouldn't assume the engine is toast. I've put a new head gasket in a 4cyl Isuzu before where the gasket let loose and the head was still true and uncracked.

I'm not assuming anything. I'd just like to swap a whole unit in after a re-seal and maybe new head.

I may just pop a head on it.
