2. What your owner's manual says -- not just viscosity, but certifications (look for acronyms like API SM, ILSAC GF-4, etc.) and change intervals as well 10W-30/15W-40 for the current temps. 15w40 only for extreme climates though is stated. 6 months, 7500 km intervals
3. Where you live Winnipeg, MB, Canada
4. How you drive (easy? hard? fast? slow?) Easy
5. What your daily drive is like (short trips? long trips? city? highway?) 30 minute city commute with freeway
6. Whether your car has any known problems Slight leak at the turbo, but not enough to even add oil between oil changes


I will also add, this is for my sister who phoned me after getting an oil change two days ago. She phoned and said her car sounded rougher after the oil change. I went over to her place and the receipt said 5w30 was put in. Looked at her owners manual and 10w30 and 15w40 for the current temps.

I als suggested she email the previous owner about which oil he was running. He was extremly friendly and still emails my sis about how the car is doing. He runs an innercity program for kids to fix cars and race them at the local road racing track.

I'd see if you can get some Rotella or Delo 10w30.

Rotella T6 5W-40 all the way - inexpensive, easy to get, and will handle all climates.

I had an '87 760 Turbo several years ago and always used 10w-40. You could do 15w40 in the summer and 10w30 in the winter or just split the difference like I did. My engine had 240k miles when I got rid of it so either way as long as you keep oil in it and keep it changed the engine will probably still run when the car goes to the junkyard. Man, those are great looking cars.

YES. That's the oil for this one.

I'd keep the OCIs at 5k on a turbo.

My first car was a 1989 740 GLE and my dad always used 10w30. I'm not sure if that was the correct viscosity?

Well phoned my sister and found out she already got the oil changed. The prior owner was using 10w-40 as well but she got 15w40 done by the oil change place. How big of a problem will this be?

None at all. 15w40 will serve you fine in the vehicle, especially for the summer.

As Garak said, the 15w40 will be great for the summer...but come the winter...Winnipeg winters....you'll want a 5W or better yet, a 0W oil for ease of starting!

You could probably get away with a 5w30 in the winter. You can check the manual to be sure. If you're interested in synthetics, there are many choices, too. My old Audi 200 Turbo would have had similar oil recommendations, and I tried Mobil Delvac 1 ESP 5w-40 and RP 0w-40 in the winter. They both worked very well and are good for all year use. The disadvantage is the price compared to a conventional 15w40.
