91 volvo 740 turbo

Would delo 400 15w40 be a good oil for this car?
I hope so since 5 qts went into my friends this morning. The car probably consumes about a qt per 1000 miles and it has 189k on it.
I want a good oil thats going to protect that turbo but im sure she woulndt want to pay for synthetics so i hope this works out and reduces consumption since she waits for the oil light to tell her to add!!

I wonder if what ever trouble that pops up in the near future isn't a result of what she's started some time ago - her "add oil" indicator method and such.

Anyway...I don't think there's going to be much of an issue with using this oil in the warmer months for those where it gets cold in the winter.

I do recall having reading on a post somewhere here that in the long run, turbos with their small oilways may wish to be pampered a little at the start till the oil thins some to help keep issues down in the long run.

Other's may be more specific.

In this case, I think "any oil is good oil" is something going for you.

the manual calls for 5w30, 10w30, and 15w40 depending on climate.

I have a '91 Volvo 740 turbo (and a '94 940 turbo; same engine) and have run Delo 400 in these engines before with no trouble. I've also run Valvoline Premium Blue 15w40, Rotella T synthetic 5W-40, and Castrol Syntec 10w30. GC would be my "oil of choice" for these engines, but it has become impossible to find in this area. By the way, unless you are using an oversize oil filter, sump capacity is 4 quarts. "Stock" filter of choice is Mann W917. A Motorcraft FL-1A will fit, in which case I put in about 4.5 quarts.

Thanks for the replies, it took 4 an 3/4 qts to get it to the full mark so i debatd for a min weather or not to add the rest of the qt and then thought about a thread I read about how much is to overfilled an decided that and extra 1/4 wouldnt hurt it.
The filter is advance autos own AA16.

I know this is the oil section but while I have your attention, can you tell me what type of transmission fluid it takes?
Im also debating on changing it to. Its pretty dark but I dont think its been to negleted to the point where it shouldnt be touched.
It seems to operate just fine.

Dexron IID or better (that means Dexron III nowadays).

Color means little. But if it smells badly burned, then it's probably past its time.

Normally, Volvo ATs benefit from a fluid change and won't die like a domestic might if it's a higher mileage example. I'll withhold recommendation on whether to change it here, as if it's got mega miles and years on the fluid . . . try to run an ARX on it first if you can (might as well do the whole powertrain).

Volvo recommends 91 or better.

It will run on 87 without problems, but the better value is with a premium grade (much better performance and mileage). Strong evidence for the fine tune-ability of these turbos; there's plenty of margin.

The Delo is a good oil for this car, at least in the warmer months. Rotella and Delvac 1300 are good dinos too. Try to talk her into an ARX treatment. The consumption might go down if she did. It's probably just a little dirty. Tell her at that mileage, the engine is just broken in.

And stick with the Mann filters.
