Where did you hear this number? I have worked with GM on various valvetrain projects over the past 6 years, and they do not allow sliding contact stresses this high in production engines.

A_Harmen I would like to provide my sources, but rest assured that neither are in good standing with GM especially both are quite frank and both have I do not care attitude. But the information is available. A lot "OEM" parts makers that provide parts for older GM V8's like to advertise this standard also.

I recently purchased a 1984 Corvette. The owners manual recommends 10W30, but I thought I would ask a question to the experts.
I believe Mobil 1 became a sponsor after 1984, so what would be the consensus on oil and weight?
Thanks in advance
The car has 40000 miles.

G,
If you drive it year-round, Mobil 1 5W30 or 0W40 would work well. I recently switched my 1990 L98 from Mobil 1 5W30 to 0W40 for our summer (110+) heat. The 0W40 Mobil 1 has a VI of 185 which is excellent. I feel I need the extra protection since when my Vette leaves the garage, it's on a 600mile trip and only stops for fuel for the next 9 hours.
