Your engine does not have any.

No mechtech2,

The advice I was liking was from the tech bulletin that brandini posted.

I'm well aware of the fact that my engine does not have oil control rings. I've owned a RX-2 and 4 RX-7's.

Thanks though. I guess one never knows.

You guys might want to do some research. They most certainly do have oil control rings. They are on the side of the rotor.

Ya thanks quint,
I think what mechtech2 was refering to were the piston type oil control rings.

I can't stop laughing...

seriously IIRC the syn oil leaves burnt goo on the sides on the combustion chamber that does not "wear off" as easily as the burned remnants of dino oil. The buildup ends up chewing the rotor seals--- i forget the correct term... the equivalent of rings.

BTW that oil meter pump is a critical component, as it mixes some of the sump oil with your fuel to lubricate the rotor as it spins. It is not uncommon for folks to disable the pump and just dump a quart of oil in the tank every fillup.

So keep an eye on that pump.

Just wanted to make sure, because they are there, and by that specific name/jargon too. A lot of people go along the route of 'they dont have rings, they have apex seals' and dont think about the whole mess of seals on the sides of the rotors.

As far as what oil to use, have you checked out rx7club.com? Its a great site, lots of oil discussions. Lots of guys use synthetics no problem.

I used dino 10w-40 in winter and 20w-50 in summer, and got decent life out of all of my Rx7's. Even my Turbo II made it to 122,000 miles (thats got to be some sort of world record) before one of the rear apex seals broke and obliverated everthing in its path, what a mess inside that was.

Have my eyes on an mint '84 down the street parked in the neighbors garage, owned by a very old guy who never drives it. Looks like it just rolled off the assembly line inside and out, its absolutely sick! We've been talking, and he seems willing. Oh the wife is going to kill me....

Thanks for the info quint. The car your neighbor has sounds like mine. There aren't too many good ones left. I bought mine a few yrs ago after being with out a RX7 for several years. I've had mine on carsforsale.com with many many lookers but no buyers yet. It takes someone who really appreciates thier uniqueness. Take care.

Wankel engines have apex seals, button seals, and side seals for sealing combustion gases on each of the 3 faces of the rotor.
Apex seals are at the tips of the rotor.
Side seals are on the sides of the rotor.
Button seals improve secondary sealing between the apex and side seals.
Wankels also have oil seals on the sides of the rotors to keep oil in the crankcase and out of the combustion chamber. These oil seals don't look a thing like oil control rings in piston engines.

I have to agree with the thicker conventional oil recommendation . We had an '86 RX-7 I guess with the 13B and it ran best on 15W40 and smoothest on 20W50. I would run at least 10W30 or 10W40 or just 15W40 HD oil.

How is owning a rotary engine btw? I would love to be able to blast an rx8 up to 9,000 rpms and actually have it thank me for it.

Owning one is a unique experience. If it wasn't for seeing the fan spinning you would wonder if it was running at idle. Very very smooth and quiet running engine. I don't know if a rotary would so much thank you for running it 9000 rpm but it would surely do it. When I was young I had a RX-2. I buried the tachometer past 8000 many times. I
have heard that the RX-8 is a well balanced beautifly handling car but a little underpowered.

Yes ive heard "underpowered" quite alot, but I also believe because most dont know how to drive them. (including me) Isn't the power band only at high rpms and keeping that rpm a rather acquired skill? A top gear review on the rx8 made me fall in love with them.
