Hi,

Last time my car was in the shop, my indy mentioned that it sounded like one of my injectors was leaking. Lots of other diesel users have mentioned improvements removing diesel injectors every 150-200k miles to at least get them all "pop test" calibrated to release at the same pressure. I figured Id take mine out get that done, perhaps some new nozzles. I pulled the hard lines from the pump and then removed them using an impact gun so that I could easily control the torque. Slow, steady torque can loosen the prechambers, and I couldnt pop my ratchet to get them out. The impact gave the most control to easily and carefully remove them without damage (the return barbs can be damaged if they arent removed perfectly straight). Anyway, here is what I found. Anyone want to read them for me?

What struck me was that despite my car having been sitting for over two weeks without being run, I pulled the injectors and four of the five were very wet with fuel and there was fuel at the seat bottom where the injector touches the prechamber. Is this normal?

Anyway, some pictures:

#1 (injector furthest to the front is #1, furthest to the back is #5) came out quite wet on the sides.

And it was dirty:

Ditto for #2:

And #3:

But #4 came out very dry:

And number 5 was wet again:

Here they all are:

And the nozzle tips:

Though #4 was the dryest, it did have the most soft carbon deposits on the outer edge. It also had junk in there as soon as I pulled it out:

The rest had what looked like rusty fuel, it was murky brown, not clear yellow, as if there was rust mixed in fuel. I blotted it all out and vacuumed all the threads and seats so they were clean prior to plugging them with paper, but here are some pictures of what Im talking about:

Is this right? My indy mentioned when I started my car cold that he heard an injector "leaking". Could that actually be four of them leaking? Or was injector #4 dry because it had already leaked out prior, so it is actually the guilty one? Any thoughts?

It does look like your injectors are leaking down as they sit. You should consider having them cleaned, pop tested & balanced. Streaming nozzles in a diesel are very, very bad for the pistons.

that is exactly what Im getting done. Re-shimmed and calibrated/pop tested with new nozzles. Thanks!

Glad to see you're taking care of an older beauty like that. Just out of curiosity, where are you having the nozzles installed & pop tested?

I'm sure you know this by now, but Lubro Moly's Diesel Purge is the Real Thing for diesels. I usually mainline a can through both TDIs every few oil changes.

Ya I agree with above.

Diesel Purge is the real deal. It is mostly super clean diesel so you can run it straight.

Woke my TDI up a tiny bit but most nozzles are due for a change at 150k regardless or so I've been told.

You are doing yourself a favor.
