Rock Auto has a lot of the parts you need at good prices, just watch the shipping costs...

Strange, the Wix 33031 fuel filter is not listed...
Oh yeah I like Rockauto really well. I placed a big order with JBugs recently for a bunch of more parts but Rockauto is where I’ll be using for the parts that are important and they have a faster shipping time. And haha on the fuel filter.

Forgot to also mention, another good clue the body is a 71’ is the rear engine cover. Only 70’ and 71’ have 2 sets of vents. 72’ and newer have 4 sets of vents.
If I recall correctly the 1970 did not have vents in the body behind the rear windows...these were introduced in 1971....

Im pretty sure like a couple of others have mentioned thst this bug is cobbled together from a number of parts from different cars
Vin looks like it was removed and tampered with... Rear wheel arches look like they are also not original either.

According to the original owner and the second owner it hasn’t been but I don’t know. The vin matches a standard beetle but I agree it appears to have been redone at some point. And I looked on the chassis for the number it matches as well. I guess we will call it the mystery beetle. According to everyone I have talked too they used to not put vin numbers on titles so you could have a title and a car and the car was yours if it was the same make and model so there is a possibility it got switched at some point in that time period.

I remember that darn interlock function. My Dad bought a new VW 412 wagon. My Mom asked him to get her some groceries on the way home from work. He put the groceries on the front seat and the car would not start. Looked in the owners manual and determined that he had to have the seat belt around the groceries bag to make it start. That weekend that option disappeared.

Ha ha ha! The groceries on the passenger seat thing! Now I remember what you guys are talking about!

That’s a 1971 Standard Beetle body. I had a 1970 Deluxe (pop out rear vent windows). My cousin had a 1973 Standard Beetle. It had huge round tri-color tail lights and larger bumpers.

It could well be a Mexico or Brazil Beetle, the VIN will provide that info.
The vin belongs to a German beetle it says on the plate it’s a German one. However the number is for a standard but this ones a super so it’s a mystery lol and all the numbers on it match the chassis number and both vin plates.

Perhaps this car was an import. Like from Europe or South America.
The vin tells me it’s German. I don’t think in the 70s they made them anywhere but Germany but I could be wrong. The vin however is for a standard beetle and not a super so that’s a mystery I’m trying to figure out on some others if anyone else has this mystery but it appears I’m alone lol.

The front grill under the bumper suggests it’s a Super Beetle body though.

If it where a 73 it should have large round taillights. Yuck.

What I meant was some military guy could have purchased the car in Europe (European specs) and eventually shipped it back to the states. A “gray market” car.

Or some guy bought the car in Mexico or further south and drove it to the US. Also a “gray market” car.

Just saying even if the car was made in Germany it might have been manufactured for some other country instead of the USA market.

Safe to say it wasn’t for Australia, New Zealand, or the UK since you’ve got left-hand drive. Lol!

Interesting history of the Mexico Beetles. It had to be about 2003 or 2004 IIRC that Aldi in Germany was selling brand new Mexico air Beetles for the last time.

No I have no idea what that is for. According to the vin it is a 1973 and that’s what year it is in the system at the DMV as and the plates are 1973 as well so if it is earlier then that’s a surprise to me lol. And yes it is a super the spare sits flat. I tried having someone else open it when I held the part in the glovebox down. The part in the glovebox separated from the fiberglass inside of the glove box and it won’t do anything
still even with some aggressive pulls.
I bought a 73 super Beatle brand new. It had big dash curved Windshield .

Yes I have determined after talking to the second owner who sold it to the person I bought it from it had the body swapped from a 1971 model so it is a 1973 chassis with a 1971 body and fenders and interior. He didn’t tell me that till I asked about how come it didn’t match a 1973 one.

A lack of details on the exact history is not always available on a car that is nearing its 50th birthday.

Well it has majority of the service records from all 4 previous owners. So that’s the good part. Just that wasn’t noted and my teacher who I got it from didn’t know either.

So did you get the electrical problems taken care of?

I'm not sure how a Frankencar procedure would be written up in the maintenance record, but I do agree the 71 body looks better than a 73.
