Hello everyone. I just acquired this car. Previous owner has been using Castrol dino 10W-40. Engine seems to be fairly clean. Any oil suggestions for this B-18D OHV engine? I plan to stick with dino as the car has about 127,000 miles on it, but a lot of storage time. I have been having good results with Havoline in a Toyota, but am thinking of a high mileage oil for the Volvo. Seal benefit? I think this engine may have felt crankshaft seals.

I'd think about using the same oil. You might want to do an Auto-RX cleaning. Then maybe some Lube Control and Fuel Power. Look at the trans and diff, too. They might need a fluid change and I'd do it anyhow, just to be sure, along with the cooling system and the brake fluid. Congrats on the 122S, they are great cars. I had a 66 122S and a 63 wagon, both great cars. If you ever let anyone touch the carbs, make sure they know what they are doing, they work well, but only if adjusted correctly. Once you've got them right, leave them alone.

I had a 66 wagon and sedan. I really liked my 66 sedan, but for some reason I hated the wagon because of handling and the gearing would make it scream at highway speeds. My sedan 122 would huff oil smoke out the breather, so I ran a hose to the back of the car like a second exhaust. 10-40 Castrol seems just fine, unless you plan on starting it up in sub-0 weather. The carbs are really simple, but you need to follow a procedure from a book or else you will get them nutzed up.I spent time in Belgium in 82 and over there where ours say 122s, theirs say Amazon. I sold mine in 79 to a girl who was involved in a serious accident. They contacted me later about the accident and said the Volvo was destroyed but they were OK. A well built car.

Bag the 10W-40. Nothing against Castrol, but a modern HDEO 15W-40 just so much better in Iron (RED) Block Volvos. The HDEO not only will keep the internals cleaner, has less VII's, it's what Volvo recommends over 5°F.

I assume you hang out at brickboard.com?

Thanks everyone. Just discovering the wealth of vintage Volvo info on the net and plan to be a regular at brickboard.com. I have admired these cars for 35 years and almost bought a wagon about 20 years ago. Looking forward to this one. Any 40 year old car will be a work in progress, but I think I can have some fun with it.

Pablo, I like the HDEO suggestion. I don`t think this car has any major consumption issues, so fouling of the CC should not be a problem.

Mine is fitted with SU carbs and they seem to be adjusted pretty well. The previous owner is a mechanical engineer who had all the shop manuals and tech info, plus competent himself. The SU carbs are somewhat reminiscent of the Amal carbs on my BSA motorcycles when I was a teenager.
