new to me...'19 Suzuki S40 w/ @ 1200 miles; sold without owners manual...plan to get one later on; guessing there are several oil weights allowed per riding conditions & climates; I live in southcentral PA & my riding 'season' is usually April-October...might extend a few weeks if temps & weather allow; temps upper 40's thru 90's & 3000-4000 miles per season;

1) oil weight to use? 2) spec'd OCI for this machine? thanks

1) oil weight to use?

I don't have an owner's manual either, but according to the FAQ post 4 Simple Answers to 4 Most Common Questions... on the Savage/S40 forum, the guru's official recommendation is to use a 40 grade oil with whatever winter rating you want. Thus, their current list of recommended oils is:

Dino -- Rotella T4 Triple Protection 15W40

Synthetic -- Rotella T-6 5W40

Synthetic -- Mobil 1 Racing 10w40

Synthetic -- Mobil 1 V Twin 20w50

As you can see, all 40 grade oils with winter grade ranging from 5W to 20W.

Overall, their preference is for the Roltella T4 15W-40 as it's cheap and works fine. All the others are also fine, but they are considered to be overkill and thus kind of a waste of money.

The overall preference for T4 can be seen in this example post where they say "use T4 and shut down all the oil threads."

FWIW, I used to use Super Tech 10W-40 MC oil, and then switched to Rotella T4 15W-40. No problems (that I know of) with either.

2) spec'd OCI for this machine? thanks

Again, I don't have a manual, but according to this post on the Savage/S40 forum, one guy says the manual recommends 3,500 mi OCI, another guy says the manual recommends 4,000 mi OCI. Don't know why the discrepancy or which one (or both?) is correct.

Also in that post, the poll of what forum members use for OCI shows that 3,000 miles is the most common.

FWIW, I do 3000-3500 miles (or annual) OCI.

You might consider joining the suzukisavage.com forum-- almost any information you need as a new owner will be there and will come from the gurus who have extensive experience with this bike, while that same information is much less likely to be found in this forum.

Any pics of the new ride ?

Look on Suzuki's website. Most manufacturers will list the owner's manuals on their website and typically can download a PDF version of it.

OCI on the S40 is 3,500 miles. Internet search yielded that result.

You aren't going to see the benefits of a synthetic oil with a recommended OCI of 3,500 miles. Probably the extreme heat cycles and blow-by/contamination from the air cooled lump are the main reasons for a shorter recommended OCI. The heat is hard on the oil and then the blow-by makes it dirty, which not even the highest quality oil can keep from getting dirty, ergo the shorter OCI.

T4 15w40 is the way I'd go on that bike, hands down.
