170K on o.e. Timing Belt, they think its no issue!

I told my girlfriend to tell her mother that she needed to replace her timing belt on her '00 Accord that had near 150k on the original timing belt. Her mom told her she didn't have the money.

It just went out and the bill is much higher than what the timing belt job would have been. Her mom actually was crying (being dramatic) and lamenting how she couldn't afford the repair/new car.

All I did was just sit there and watch TV (the conversation I heard was over the phone).

Let me guess, your girlfriends mother has plenty of money for beer, cigarettes, lotto and is already $5k into full backside tattoo?

Nah, but she has enough money to go to the casinos every other week and bingo in between. I warned her what could happen and that it was regular maintenance and not an "extra"...she just elected not to listen. So no sympathy here.

She fits the same demographic that lives paycheck to paycheck spending every bit of discretionary income on unnecessary things. Then bemoaning when life throws them things like this.

My wife works with a couple of colored office girls that are always complaining about not having enough. Of course they have no problem dropping $150 a week for a hair weave and getting their nails done.

This is why some people will always be poor even when it is withing their very control to make wiser choices but choose not too.

I am glad I finally used some of my paid time off days and did my timing belt, water pump, tensioner, replaced spark plugs, replaced the pcv valve, and crank seal that was weeping. This was all done at 124k, car has 139k on it now. Cheap insurance, and in another 80k to 90k I will replace the timing belt again.

I did the timing belt on the wife's Clio at 70k (last year) think it is due at 72k miles or five years.

Bit broke at the moment but the Volvo is due at 150k or 10 years from memory, I am in two minds, to buy a different car with autobox, preferably a Ford Galaxy 7 seater, can get an ex fleet 3 yr old for £7000, with high mileage but full service history. Or put the money into the Volvo, need to make choice soon as the Volvo will need front pads within next 10k.

Then pure luck would be relied on vs. good common sense and maintenance!

That's just it. People stress out over the T-belt itself, when 99% of the time it's one of the rotating elements associated with the belt, that takes it out anyway.

I have never seen a T-belt "snap" on it's own. Ever.

OTOH, I think the ~100K mile mark is good change point, provided it's over a reasonable amount of time, like 5yrs or so.

Some of those international ~36Kmi change intervals listed above are insane?!? Why? Are these vehicles being used as dune-buggies?

Mike as someone who always values the $$, who has 260k+ on his Corolla with never doing anything other than oil changes, 1 PCV , 1 set of sparkplugs and never checked the valves(I'm still on the OEM belt) I'd CHANGE the belt right away.

I've seen what happens to engines that snap the timing belt and its not pretty. And most of those happen WELL before 170k miles.

CHANGE the belt!

Take care, Bill

I'd say that they've been very lucky.
Timing belt engines are not for irresponsible owners, particularly interference engines.
It isn't a question of whether their luck runs out, but of when.
They could be driving through an area safe enough to drive through, but not to get stuck in.
They could be far from home with a dead cell phone battery.
They could be on a drive to the ER.
The timing belt will neither know nor care.
They should count themselves lucky and spend the ~$300.00 or so it will take to have the job done.
When the thing breaks, and it will, they'll probably talk about what a POS a Mitsu car is.

The car now has 187K and still has the OE timing belt. What amazes me most is that this car runs well, especially considering its horrible service record.

He brought the car to me at 170,500 miles and it was over 2 qts low and had been over 10K on that OCI. He brought it to me today, again with over 2 qts low. On top of that, the last change was over 17K miles ago on that conventional oil change! The motor just purrs.

Those 2.0 Mitsubishi engines must be pretty stout.

It depends when the Mitsubishi 2.0L engine was built.

Between 1995 and 1999, the one fitted to the Eclipse was junk. If you ever read about Crank Walk, this is the probably be in the first article you read about.

Updating thread again, it's safe to say the t-belt won't be getting done as their mechanic told them "it looks ok". Car has around 192K now, they just dumped $1,700 into it replacing the trans and other minor things. 1 week later they tell me it's starting to overheat, so off to the mechanic she goes again! I think she's heading downhill, but it's their money. Plus, the A/C is broken which is a nightmare in the summer's here. 118F today!

Once a car of that age and poor care starts to overheat, it's done. $1700? Would have drove it to the junk yard personally.

Totally agree!!

And the little know it all wifey thinks it's fine? Depending on her personality and your relationship with here and your brother, I'd almost say let it be, and when it goes and pushes the valves through the pistons, tell them "told yea so!"

People that want advice but still think they know - let them be. Worry about your own situation.

wow @ 187k now! Now that's beyond pushing ones luck.
Are the tire belts hanging out whipping around like a bad hair day too

I've had a few with belts (still have one) and would never go beyond recommended time/mileage. With my luck they would be fine until I'm out in the middle of nowhere with no cell service and bigfoot would be the 1st to come along to kick my buuttt
