I just changed the oil and filter on a 17 HP Kohler engine on a Craftsman tractor. The adapter the filter threads onto has a tiny hole of about 1/8 inch diameter. Does this tiny hole flow all the oil the engine needs, or, is this some kind of bypass filter that filters a small portion of the oil? Thanks in advance for any advice. The mower runs fine, I was just curious how the oiling system worked.

Probably uses a small oil pump that puts the oil through the filter and then just drops it back into the crankcase. The rest of the engine is just splash lubricated.

It depends upon the model and vintage. Both the Courage and Command lines are full pressure lubricated. The K series II is, while the original K is not full pressure lubricated (pressure spray).

Kohler 17HP Courage manual:

And from the 17HP Command manual:

The K Series II

The oil pump only pumps about 1/2 quart per minute - - if that.

The flow "rate" is VERY, Very low compared to a typical car/truck.

Ed, there's not a mower engine made that has an oil pump capable of opening the bypass on any oil filter unless the filter media is almost completely contaminated.

Thanks to everyone for the info :-). I changed the stock filter to a Fram Ultra XG 3614. I was worried the Fram would not flow enough. I think that I will run the Ultra for two or three years based on the low oil flow compared to a car.

I am always blown away by the high level of knowledge on this board.
