Anyone own one? Although my son is only 5, I'm looking for a good shooting target gun that we can have some father/son time with. I already have a .22 LR semi-auto which is a blast to shoot. I'm curious about the .17 HMR round and figured this might be the best place to ask.

If cost of ammo is a deciding factor. $4.00 vs $8.00
.22 is still the low cost leader.
My wife nails 60 mm paint balls, off golf tees, with her .17 hm2 at 100 yards on a consistant basis.
Ballistics are not too much different than HMR. and much flatter than top $$$ .22 ammo.

Yes! I'll say up front that it is one of the most fun cartridges out there. You won't be disappointed. Recoil is about the same as a .22 LR, nonexistent in a full size rifle.
I have an Anschutz 1717 that will shoot sub 1" groups at 100 yards. Picking off golf balls at 200 yards on a calm day is a blast.
A friend bought one of the Savage heavy barrel, thumbhole stock, accu-trigger, target/varmint guns in .17 HMR. It shoots almost as well as the Anschutz. Highly recommended, especially for a sub $400 gun. I understand the Savage Classic is a real shooter too.

Great that you're getting your son involved in one of the greatest pastimes available where youths can compete pretty well evenly with adults.

I have a conversion kit for 45acp pistols to shoot 17HM2 and it's a blast. The grip would probably be too large for the boy and that's a shame because recoil is very light although noise is a factor. I use double ear protection when shooting the 17. I also have kits to shoot 22lr, 38 special, 38 super, 9mm,40S&W,10mm and 460 Rowland in my 45,s.

I have the Marlin bull barrel. I love it. Extremely fun to shoot. Fast little .17 grain bullet. I have a little difficulty getting it to group tightly at 100+ yards. I haven't found with brand of ammo it likes the best. I'm shooting Winchester supreme ballistic tips.
Thanks for all the responses so far. I had my crossbow out the other day to knock off the dust and he is amazed by it. He's not strong enough to pull the trigger (bow is 160# pull) yet as it is pretty a heavy and long pull. I figured if he liked that so much, now "may" be the time to introduce a BB/Pellet pistol or rifle and go from there. He's not much on loud noises so an air gun is the way to go for now. Just looking for options for when he gets older. As for a new "toy", I would love to play around with one at an open range. Trouble is, the only thing we have close is an indoor pay range. It does have rifle targets but I have never used them.
