$15.00 Bluetooth OBDII scanner.

Just received my Blue Tooth scanner today. It is a Chinese eBay one. It seemed to work on our 08 Chevy Uplander ok, but it would only read engine temp on the 96 Max. I purposely set a CEL, but it would not detect a trouble code. I was running the Torque lite (free) app.

I went here {removed pirated link of paid app. Its $4.99 on the play store} and downloaded pro for free. Everything works great now.

I had to go into Settings>Applications, and check Unknown Sources to allow the phone to download the App. I am on a DroidX BTW.

I will try it on my In-laws '99 F250 and '99 Mercury Villager tomorrow.

Well it sounds like you got your money's worth. But there are better ones for around $100. It all depends upon your needs.

I have the same device bought from Ebay, with Torque pro it works well for the money.

I have an identical looking one it had issues with certain cars and models.

I got a name brand one for 150$ it reads 2-3x faster and works on everything so far.


Cant beat the cheapie one though if it works on all your vehicles.

I don't mean to hijack the OP's thread, but I'm in the market for a scanner. I would prefer to pay the $100-$150 for name brand and not worry about it.

Which scanner do you recommend?

I've been using this $15 adapter with the Torque scanner app for ~2 years now (since Torque came out). It's helped me diagnose a bunch of issues on multiple cars, acts like a ODBII reader/clearer, and has a bunch of other AWESOME perks.

For $20 - it beats the pants off of ANY datalogger that doesn't actually tune the vehicle. For my Mazda, the other alternative was $600 of a tuner/datalogger. Even though I now have the need for tuning - the $600 tuner won't data log as well as Torque does.

Torque will lay the plots over a GoogleMaps all on their website so you can see where you were and what the car was doing. Good to know if you know where you gag'd it, but not when exactly.

Also - Torque has a free add-on that lets you overlay your datalogs onto video if you have a dash mount for your phone to take video of track days and what not. The phones accelerometer works just fine for G's as well.


Note: I use a Galaxy Nexus w/ Jelly Bean (Android 4.2.x)

I'd reckon the inability for Torque Lite to read your motor is either it doesn't have a full compliment of sensors, or Torque just wasn't set up correctly.

You can also manually input PID (I think that's the acronym) codes that you would use in other data loggers if Torque doesn't automatically recognize the sensor data.

My adapter is smaller but same idea. I went with Pro from the beginning and have been happy with it. Unfortunately my cars don't monitor oil pressure. Really can't beat it for what it does at that price.

Same folks who would pirate an app probably complain about Chinese stealing IP.

No wonder tech jobs are going overseas. Folks would rather steal software than support someone developing code.

No, the OP posted that he/she got the Pro version of the $5 app for free from some pirate site.
