My great uncle has a '13 Silverado with 5.3l v8 he got his first oil change for free at the dealer. So I went and bought him 6qts of extended performance m1 5w30. He bought high mileage control and hm10060 filter... The truck only has 7300mi... Anyways he is 81yrs old so need to take that stuff back. To get to the point what oil filter should I get for his truck?

Remember, GM STRONGLY recommends using dexos licensed oils.

I own a 2013 Silverado with the 5.3L engine and I use Mobil 1 5w30 and an AC Delco PF48 oil filter.

Mobil1 Extended Performance is not the High Mieage flavor. EP is for extended drain intervals rather than high mileage vehicles.

Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w30 is Dexos1 certified. You're good to go there.

As for a filter, definitely grab a NAPA Gold or a WIX.

My 81yr old uncle grabbed the high mileage conventional oil and hm fram filter. Are the ac delco pf48 good filters? The m1 is guaranteed for 15k is there a decently priced filter that will last that long? Is there a napa filter that would be good for 15k mi?

AC Delco PF48 is a good filter and it is a non E-core.

Yes I know there Is only syn blends and syn. That's why I got the m1 extended performance 5w30, but once again my 81yr old uncle had no idea what dexos approval was.

Now would the pf48 be good for 10k mi plus intervals? The m1 guarantees protection for 15k mi.

I don't believe the PF48 is that long a life filter. As far as going oil changes 15K, I would not do it while the truck is under warranty. Go with the oil life meter. If you would have any warranty work done, the dealer will know that you've been changing oil after the OLM.

As of right now, my OLM tells me to change the oil every 8K miles. Run your M1 EP for the full 8K and change the PF48 oil filter every 4K.

On a new engine that is super clean inside, any full synthetic would go 8~10K easily, and probably even a PureOne. I'd rather spend a little more for a filter that I could leave on for the whole 8~10K OCI.

That's what I was thinking. Does anyone have facts on which filter is best? As in absolute micron ratings at rated flow and efficiency levels?

Probably the PureOne (99.9% @ 20 microns) or the Fram Ultra (99% @ 20 microns). Jim Allen just said he ran a PureOne for 15K miles on his "test truck" and his delta-p instrumentation showed the delta-p hardly increased from new to 15K of use.

The PureOne and the Ultra have basically the same flow vs psid, the Ultra being a little better due to full synthetic media. Here's a good thread that proves the PureOne is not "restrictive" to flow like the internet false rumor mill says>

The Ultra is rated to 15K OCIs, so you would know for sure that it can do the job with no worries whatsoever.

Of course, because GM isn't going to design an oil life monitoring system that says to change oil every 8K ~ 10K miles then design an oil filter that can't do that too.

Old habits die hard. I remember when we bought our first GMC fleet van with an OLM in it. My help thought I was CRAZY because we did not change the oil every month anymore!

The van was recently sold with over 500k miles on it. It ran perfectly, quiet, no knocks or taps even when cold, never used a drop or leaked. The buyer was stunned when he went under the van to look at it!

Absolutely nothing wrong with running the PF48 out to OLM distance or 1 year, whichever comes first. No need for a Gucci filter. This is what I do with my G8 GT.
