10w40 in a Cummins 5.9L Six

block heaters.... The "problem" with Cummins is that they start so easily, but the oil isn't heated and it takes a looong time for it to pump up at even mild winter temps when running 15-40. Watch the oil guage action. With a quick start it is easy to feel like everying is going great with the engine.

Pan heater or a lower pour point are the answers. Block heater, while certainly necessary, is sort of misleading.

Just got my 93 Dodge broken in with 300K+ miles. Now I'm in for the long haul.

Hence the reasoning behind my wanting use of a beefed up 10w40, just for the little extra starting protection, without going too far off base so to speak.

Thanks for all of the input everybody!!

Any reason why one wouldn't use a CI-4+ rated oil like Amsoil"s 10w-40 here?
It seems to pour & pump like a 5W-40, and I cannot see it as being worse than Rotella 5W-40 at all.

I don't think they make a diesel 10w-40.

I really started becoming fond of oil pan heaters in the early 80's. I have them on all my engines. For some reason, a lot of folks prefer to overlook them, but those of us who have used them would not prefer to go without them. They really use so little power but do a very good job. And while a block heater is fine for all the areas the coolant is resting, at least with an oil pan heater to compliment it, the lower block gets some warmth as well. Kind of a complete package. I equate not using a pan heater in conjunction with a block heater as like putting on a coat in cold weather but going without your pants.

Yea that's true. I was just going by looking in the diesel section on their website.

have u tried use Q8 T800 10w40? it is one of hdeo oil with 10w40 sae but feels like 5w40..apart from the winter problem..i think it closes to 5w40 specs..since in my place there is no winter in my weather.
