10W-40 HDEO oil? Why not?

I also need to point out the Amsoil AMO exceeds the unimpressive API tests. The oil is not a weasel oil and will blow the Mystik out of the water. It is just not my favorite choice, trying to make that clear does not make it weak. In fact it's just a testimony to Amsoil's impressive diesel oil line up.

I even forgot to mention the dual base PCO which has the silly API mark as well.

PABLO you need to take a look at the requirments of APL CI-4PLUS which includes passing MACK,CUMMINS ,CAT along with a severe JONH DEERE test,I would not call these tests unimpressive.

OK I do agree the latest diesel tests are not the minimalist tests they used to be. I was referring to the GF-3, GF-4, SL when mentioning the API mark.

What is interesting about this extrapolated data for the proposed blending of Delvac 1300 15W-40 and Mobil 1 T&SUV (a prosepective 10W-40 HDEO concoction) is that these numbers are almost identical with those listed for the Cenex Maxtron 15W-40. The obvious solution to my quest is to find the Cenex Maxtron 15W-40 and run it year 'round.

The problem is that this Cenex formulation is not as accessible as the Mobil Delvac 1300 and T&SUV oils. Same total price (around $2.80/Qt.), but not easily obtained.

Sigh . . . !

Well, I'm locked into the blending process anyway because I already have the oils stashed for it. But after the blendings and the OCIs I will see if I can put my hands on the Cenex Maxtron 15W-40. I'm told this formulation has done very well in extended OCIs with fleet applications.

Since you made up that chart, you should have included the published specs for Schaeffer's 7000 15w-40 also. Here they are if anybody is interested:

Well, I didn't find the HTHS info. for hardly any of the others, so didn't have enough about HTHS to list. Maybe I overlooked HTHS, but I don't think so.

I didn't exclude Schaeffer's because it's a bad oil. To the contrary, it's obviously a superior oil. I just didn't include it because it is not in my price range at this time. I moved beyond it as a possibility because of cost. By the time it's delivered to my neck of the woods, after shipping and the state sales tax, it's close to $4.69/qt. for the 7000 15W-40 synblend and $5.53/qt. for the 9000 5W-40 syn.

This cost info. came from Schaeffer's distribution center located in my State. The local Schaeffer's rep. offers the 15W-40 for about the same cost ($4.59/qt., includ.tax) for the 15W-40 and doesn't carry the 5W-40, although I'm sure he could probably order it.

In short, based on info. I've read here on BITOG about Schaeffer oil deals in other states, I'm not getting much accommodation from my local and state Schaeffer's reps.

No complaints on my part. I'd love to use Schaeffer's oils, but it's simply a case whereby, with a 14 qt. sump, these oils don't fit my budget. No offense meant to anybody.

1 gal Delo 400=$8.99
4 qts T&SUV 5w-40=$21.6
Total=$30.59
$30.59/8=$3.82/qt

Your choice...but I still think buying Rotella T Synthetic 5W40 is a better deal and will ultimately perform better...IIRC, one of the professionals on this forum mentioned a while back that backyard brews may not be as good over long drains.

I have some reservations about mixing oils, too, but in this case 59Vetteman did have an excellent UOA with a 50:50 mix of Delvac 1300 and Mob.T&SUV.

Extended drain? I don't think so, but his results were better with his Power Stroke of the same vintage as mine with what I get with Delo 400 on a 3,000 mi. OCI. So, I thought I would give it a try, especially since I got such a good deal on the Delvac 1300 Super ($1.16/qt).

Besides, because I live in a small town and have difficulty getting the oil fully warmed up on most town trips, I won't go over 6 month OCIs anyway. Under these circumstances, I wouldn't do so even with substantial oil formulas as Schaeffer offers. Consequently, extended oil change intervals are not really an issue.

The other parameter I have for mixing oils is to mix oils only from the same company, and hopefully from the same family of oils within the company. For instance, I've considered mixing a 3:2 batch of GC and Castrol Syntech 5W-20, to thin GC a bit for my '02 Outback. Both of these oils are from the same Castrol family of oils. At least there is some possibility for compatibility (for them complementing one another). (

Pablo, I just looked at those numbers on AME 15w-40. It doesn't look like 10w-40. Nope, If I were to have those numbers put in front of me and told to name the visocosity, I would say 5w-40

And what about Delvac 1 or M1 T&S with 102cSt at 40C? Looks like a 10w-40 or a European low-cost 15w-40!

Many Mobil syns have relatively high viscosities at 40C. They same can be said about Delo 400.

Is there a special type of VI-improvers which characterizes these high viscosity numbers at medium temps?
