10w-30 or 5w-30 for oil consumption?

should i put 10w30 or Pennzoil Conventional 5w30 SN in my friend's 1999 honda civic. His car has 200k+ miles. Were in Northern california, so temps are not a factor.

His civic burns about 1 quart every 5000 miles, so which weight is better for burnoff 10w or 5w? I have both in my garage.

1 qt every 5000 miles isn't nothing. I've had luck using Castrol synthetic. Usually heavier reduces consumption.

I'd use either.
Some 10w30s are actually thinner than some 5w30s at operating temperature, so any given 10w30 could actually give higher consumption.
A 10W-40 might give reduced consumption.
Anyway, a quart in 5K in a 200K engine seems pretty reasonable to me.

I second... Errr, third the fact that a quart every 5k isn't out of the norm. Top it off and run the oil a bit longer, if the engine is clean and in good health.

My thoughts. I believe PP is thinner in 10w30 at temp than the 5w30 for example. Use whatever, 1q/5K is nothing.

1 quart every 5000 miles is something most Saturn owners can only DREAM of.

You can worry about oil consumption when it's closer to 1 quart/1000 miles.

You should consider yourself lucky with a Honda/Acura engine with 200k on it that burns that little of oil, I am somewhere around 1qt for ever 1.5k miles at 207k with a suspicion of some neglected oil changes, but none the less unless you have owned the car since new and babied it for a Honda/Acura you shouldn't worry.

Use what ever you want and just chalk the 1qt every 5k up as a add pack refresher

10w will not stop consumption any better than a 5w

my friends 94 integra has 270k and does not consume any oil. he uses castrol gtx 10w30

Use a high milage 5W30 or 10W30

I agree with Bluestream, try high mileage 5W30 or 10W30 to see if it will reduce or stop oil consumption.

Yeah 1 quart is nothing for such a high mileage engine. If you really want to experiment, why not try Rotella T6 5w-40. I heard it does wonders for Honda/Acura engines.

All engines consume oil, whether you can notice it in a typically short OCI is something else. A lot depends on how the engine is driven; lots of high rev's usually increases oil consumption.
Anyway 5,000mi/gt is perfectly fine and no remedy is required.
Having said that, a 5w30 synthetic will have less oil burn off than an antiquated 10w30 conventional.
Any 5w30 syn' on sale is what I'd suggest.

Pennzoil SAE 5W30 PDS (SN/GL-5)
Not sure if this is what you want -- but this one was updated Feb 2010 and shows SN/GF-5. I typically don't use Pennzoil conventional, so I just pulled the PDS off the Shell Portal I use for my other stuff.

I had a 99 civic and only ran 5w30 in it for 9 years and that is what the manual called for.
